First Grade News January 22-25 Mrs. Shanahan’s Class In language arts, the children found out that "oo" has two sounds as in the words look and pool. They identified nouns, verbs, and adjectives in sentences. We discussed the elements found in a story (setting, characters, problem, solution) and each child wrote a narrative. During readers workshop, each child chose their own book to read and wrote a connection he/she had with the story. All the children are reading various chapter books in small groups. They are responsible for answering questions to measure comprehension. Math, We celebrated the "100th" day of school by counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. We continued working on probability, counting coins, graphing, and place value. The children are learning to read a clock (hour and 1/2 hour). Please work on this objective at home. The children are learning the different ways we measure time (seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, seasons, years). Social Studies and Science, The class read about the water cycle and drew a model of the cycle. They read a book about water and listed three facts learned. The children used thermometers to measure the temperature of water (hot & cold). We discussed different land forms and bodies of water which the children illustrated in their own flip-books. Other, Next week, we will begin our unit on heroes.
