sharthistory Ms. Susan Loucks
Sacred Heart Academy
I've added some links to this site. I found all of them and many explanations and/or definitions in an excellent textbook called Artforms by Duane Preble, Sarah Preble, and Patrick Frank.

Watch this page. I'll be adding links, hints and info.

If anyone needs extra help, I'll be available on Mondays and Wednesdays during homeroom (from 7:40 a.m.) in my homeroom, #311.

Here are some notes to study for the test (Monday):

'Renaissance' the word means 'rebirth.' It was a time of renewed interest in the art and ideas of CLASSICAL Greece and Rome.

During the Renaissance, the religious fervor of the Middle Ages was challenged by logical thought. New and more scientific approaches were brought to the quest for realism in art. Can you think of a specific example? (artists such as Michelangelo studying anatomy).
Painting and sculpture were liberated from their medieval roles as supplements to architecture. (Do you know what I mean by this?)
Artists, who had been anonymous workers in the Middle Ages, became celebrated figures (authorship)
During the Renaissance, the nude was a major subject for art.
High Renaissance 1490-1530. Who were the three "star artists" of the High Renaissance?
***Religious themes in human terms***

I would like you to know several important pieces of Renaissance art. I will show them again during Friday's review:

LAMENTATION by Giotto, 1305. Why is this an important painting?

HOLY TRINITY by Masaccio, 1425. Why is this an important painting?

DAVID by Donatello, 1425-1430. Why is this an important sculpture?

Impressionism:

How was the term 'Impressionism' coined? A group of painters were denied the right to exhibit their work at the Salon Show of 1873. In 1874 they mounted an independent exhibition. A critic who objected to the sketchy, unfinished look of the paintings dubbed the work 'Impressionism'. He coined the term to mock a painting by Monet entitled "Impression: Sunrise."

landscape
ordinary scenes, leisure activities of the middle class
painted outdoors - various atmospheric conditions, times of day and seasons
PAINTED RAPIDLY, ON LOCATION. THIS GAVE THE WORK A SKETCHY, UNFINISHED QUALITY.
painted from direct observation
studied physics in order to learn how the eye perceives light. THEY WANTED TO PAINT EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAW.
small dots, dabs and/or patches of color UNMIXED/UNBLENDED
strongest between 1870 and 1880
Monet continued to advance Impressionism for his entire life.

Post Impressionists had no single style, rather they reacted or responded to Impressionism differently. Some Post Impressionists: Mary Cassatt, Talouse Lautrec, Degas, van Gogh

know THE BOATING PARTY by Mary Cassatt. Why is this an interesting painting?

How did snapshot photography influence the work of the Post Impressionists?
