Welcome to Shipyards VESL class! Class Description VESL means Vocational English as a Second Language. This class is called VESL because: In addition to learning and practicing English, you will develop important vocational or job skills, such as identifying and writing names of tools and materials, learning how to write an accident report, working in groups, etc. Class Instruction This is a multi-level ESL class. During classroom time, we will study many English skills related to the shipyards, such as grammar, reading, writing, spelling, conversation and pronunciation, vocabulary, idioms, etc. The VESL Lab On Saturdays, you will study in the VESL lab at the Cesar Chavez Campus, 1960 National Ave., San Diego, CA 92113, 619-230-2895 (phone). Your teacher will help you choose English and/or shipyard lessons to do during the lab, You will work on the computers, use English learning software and websites, You will also practice English with a partner or small groups. Take advantage of these opportunities! Checklists in the VESL Lab Please use checklists to track your work in the VESL Lab. For example, for the Quia quizzes and activities, ask your teacher for the Quia VESL Shipyards checklist. After you complete each quiz or activity, fill-in the date and score (if there is a score) and ask the Lab Instructor to initial. This is a great way to keep track of your work in the lab.
