* * * * * * * * * HUNTING TIP OF THE WEEK * * * * * * * * * * After you shoot your longbeard, it's a good idea to go to the turkey as quickly as possible. Because a gobbler's vital zone (in the head and neck) is so thin, what appears to be a solid hit might only stun the bird long enough to give you false hope. Just because the bird is chewing dirt and flopping does NOT mean that he's finished. The only way to be sure is to run to the downed turkey and put a boot over his neck, but avoid grabbing his legs too quickly (His spurs can inflict serious injury). If you're hunting with a partner and the two of you are going for a "double," however, be careful not to run into your buddy's line of fire -- if he or she should require a follow-up shot. A minute's hesitation would be muchsafer! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The wild turkeys of Goodwater Lodge have started their Spring strut.
