Need Statement:
Studies have reported that beta-blockers reduced the mortality in acute myocardial infarction in the first week by 13% and long-term mortality by 23%. Despite the evidence demonstrating the effectivness of beta-blockers, many patient medical records have no documentation that beta-blocker therapy was administered and no explanation as to why it was not given. A study by the Rand Corporation, including a review of over 1,000 patient records, showed that only 45% received beta-blockers. The American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, Joint Commission, and Medicare have all identified the early administration of beta-blocker therapy in acute myocardial infarction as an important area for imporvement in hospitals.
