Welcome to the 2008-09 school year! I am very excited about this year and all it holds for our children!
Thank you to those who came to Back to School Night. I appreciate your willingness to attend and look forward to working with you to help your children learn! And to those who could not attend, I hope to meet you -- perhaps at Parent Teacher Conferences in October!
The children have many learning adventures in store for this school year! We will not only learn pre-reading and reading skills, but will also learn about math, science, and social studies!
In reading, we will begin with lessons on the letters of the alphabet -- not only their names, but the sounds they make and how we can put those sounds together to make words. We will also learn sight words each week and learn how to write both the sight words and the individual letters of the alphabet. We will also have activities about rhyming and nursery rhymes! We have learned Little Miss Muffet, Hey Diddle Diddle, and One, Two, Three, Four, Five. The children are getting good at reciting them and are learning about those very important rhyming words!
In math, we are learning about sorting, about position words, about same and different, and about right and left. This last one is a difficult one for the children to grasp -- so each day they will be given a red dot on their right hand (the "Red Right") to help them with that concept. We will begin learning how to write numbers 1-10 as well.
In social studies, we will be starting a unit on the family. Look for an at home project that will be coming your way!!
In science, the children will begin a hands-on study of trees. We will be learning about different types of trees, the seasons, and also look at trees in our area -- what few trees we have!!
