These are quarterly tests mandated by the school division that we take for math and history. The math tests have been administered for some time, but this is the first year for the history tests. It is a twenty question test whose purpose is to measure how well the students have learned the material taught in the third quarter and how well they remember material from quarters one and two. This test will not count as a grade. Geography and Climate -Appalachian Mountains, Piedmont, Atlantic Coastal Plain, good harbors, rivers -Humid Climate Economy -Large farms/plantations, cash crops, wood products, small farms -Slavery Social Life -Plantations, mansions, indentured servants, few cities, few schools -Church of England Political and Civic Life -Counties NEW ENGLAND COLONIES Geography and Climate -Appalachian Mountains, Boston harbor, hilly terrain, rocky soil, jagged coastline Economy -fishing, shipbuilding and naval supplies, trade, port cities, skilled craftsmen, shopkeepers Social Life -Village and church as center of life -Religious reformers and separatists -Separatists wanted to separate from the Church of England Political and Civic Life -Town meetings Plymouth Colony: Settled by Separatists from the Church of England who wanted to avoid religious persecution Persecution: unfair treatment because of your beliefs Massachusetts Bay Colony: settled by Puritans who wanted to avoid religious persecution Puritans: people who wanted to purify the Church of England MID-ATLANTIC COLONIES Geography and Climate -Appalachian Mountains, Coastal Lowlands (harbors and bays, wide and deep rivers), rich farmland -Climate: moderate Economy -livestock and grain, trading, skilled and unskilled workers Social Life -villages and cities, diverse lifestyles, diverse religions Political and Civic Life -Market towns Pennsylvania was founded by Quakers who believed in religious freedom. PEOPLE Large Landowners: -lived mostly in the South -relied on indentured servants and slaves for labor -educated in some cases -rich social culture Farmers: -worked the land according to the region -relied on family members for labor Artisans: -worked as craftsmen in towns and on plantations -lived in small villages and cities Women: -worked as caretakers, homemakers, and houseworkers -could not vote -few chances for an education Indentured Servants: -Consisted of men and women who did not have money for passage to the colonies who agreed to work without pay for the person who paid their passage -free at the end of the contract Slaves: -Captured in Africa, sold to slave traders, shipped to the colonies -owned as property -no rights -born into slavery ECONOMIC RELATIONSHIPS -England imposed strict control over trade -England taxed the colonies after the French and Indian War -Colonies traded raw materials for goods POLITICAL RELATIONSHIPS -colonists had to obey English laws that were enforced by governors -colonial governors were appointed by the king or by the proprietor -colonial legislatures made laws for each colony and were monitored by colonial governors
