December Reading Strategies Comprehension Strategies- Content Area Text Try this with your science or social studies text. Look: Look at the title, subheadings, pictures, bold or italic words, and graphs in the selection of the text. Brainstorm: Think of everything you already know about this topic. Predict: What do you think this text will be about? Prepare for purpose: Read the questions at the end of the section, if there are any. If there are not, see if you can use the information from the Look section to create some questions of your own. Monitor Reading: Split your text into sections (paragraph, page, subheading, etc.)After each section ask yourself if you can summarize the information. Did you understand the vocabulary? Can you pick out the main idea nd supporting details? If not, you may need to reread to clarify what you aren't sure of in the text. Recall and Comprehension: Try putting the information into categories. For example, if you are reading about Endangered Species you could create a chart the incorporates the different animals and their characteristics such as: features, food, where found, possible cause of endangerment, etc. Organizing information makes it easier to understand. In this case you could compare and contrast the animals easily.
