//BIENVENIDOS, MIS ESTUDIANTES! 2005-2006 Here you will find the material that was covered in class, homework assignments, announcements of upcoming quizzes and tests, , projects and anything relevant to our course of study. It will be updated each day. Be sure to check the website if you are absent or if you have forgotten what/when assignments are due. Also, you will find an activities section below the previously mentioned section. This includes computer activities which practice vocabulary and grammar skills presented in class. FINAL EXAM WILL BE ON WED., JUNE 7, 2006, FROM 10:00 AM TO 11:35 PM IN THE CAFETERIA. 1/6/06: We began class by reviewing the Familiar Affirmative Commands. We then learned the Familiar Negative Commands(text p. 392). The Final Exam will be on Wed., June 7, at 10:00 AM to 11:35 AM, in the cafeteria! 31/5/06: Today we completed our study of Formal Commands by adding seguir derecho and the irregulars ser and ir (text p. 198). Afterwards we learned the Familiar (Informal) Affirmative Commands from text p. 387. We did several exercises using these commands as well. 30/5/06: Review packets were handed out to each student as well as a handout which describes the set-up of the Final Exam. Afterwards we reviewed Regular Formal Singular and Plural Commands and we added the spelling change commands of car, gar, zar words (text p. 198). This evening's assignment is to translate the dialogue from text p. 193 into English. 26/5/06: Quizzes from yesterday were returned, reviewed and collected for filing. Students then learned how to form FORMAL COMMANDS, both the singular and the plural (C. 8, 2nd section). This evening's assigment is to complete the handout on formal commands and to study! HASTA MARTES! 25/5/06: We began class by taking the quiz on the Present Tense of ESTAR, ESTAR used for temporary condition and ESTAR used in forming the Present Progressive Tense. If you were absent today, please be prepared to take this quiz on the day of your return to school. Afterwards we reviewed the Present Tense and words associated with it, the Preterite Tense and words associated with it, the Present Progressive Tense and words associated with it. We then learned words associated with the Future Tense and the formation of the immediate future (text p. 360/361). If you were absent today, be sure to carefully study the material on pages 360/361 because it will be on the Final Exam! Final Exam will be Wed., June 7, from 10:00 A.M. until 11:35 A.M. 23/5/06: Today we learned how to formthe PRESENT PROGRESSIVE TENSE from text p. 353/354. We did Ex. F from text p. 355 and we put this on the chalkboard for correction. Then we did Ex. B from workbook p. 192 and we put this on the chalkboard for correction. This evening's assignment is to study for tomorrow's quiz which includes: Present Tense of ESTAR, text p. 189 (completion), ESTAR usesd for Temporary Condition, text p. 214/215 (exercise on quiz similar to Ex. F from text p. 215--complete sentence answers), and the PRESENT PROGRESSIVE TENSE, text p. 353/354 (section on quiz is similar to Ex. F on texzt p. 355--stuents must write complete sentences). Students were given Final Exam Guidesheets. 19/5/06: Today we watched the video THE BRONZE SCREEN, a video about Hispanic personalities in the movies (includes past and present). 18/5/06: We began class by taking the C. 8 Oral Proficiency Test. If you were absent today, be prepared to make this up on the day of your return to school. Afterwards students learned ESTAR used for temporary condition (text p. 214). We did Ex. F from text p. 215 and we put this on the chalkboard for correction. Next we did Ex. E from text p. 214/215 and we put # 1 thru 5 on the chalkboard for correction. On Wed., 5/24, there will be a quiz on the Present Tense of Extar (text p. 189/190), Estar used for temporary condition (text p. 214/215) and the Present Progressive Tense (text p. 353/354). 17//5/06: We began class by doing Ex. E from handout p. 94. We put this on the chalkboard for correction. Next we put last evening's assignment on the board for correction. We did Ex. G from text p. 189 and Ex. G from handout p. 102 and Ex. D from handout pages 99/100. This evening's assignment is to study pages 185 thru 190 for tomorrow's Oral Proficiency Test. 16/5/06: We began class by reviewing the prepositions of place and the two new nouns presented yesterday from text p. 185. Next we did Ex. A/B from text p. 186 orally. We then put Ex. C from text p. 186/187 on the chalkboard for correction. Students received a packet to accompany text p. 185 thru 190 in class today. In this packet, we did Ex. B and C on p. 98/99 and Ex. D from packet p. 99/100. This evening's assignment is to complete Ex. H from text p. 189. Oral Proficiency on text p. 185 thru 190 on Thursday, 5/18/06. 15/5/06: C. 7 Tests were returned, reviewed and collected for filing. Today we learned vocabulary from text p. 185. If you still have to take this test, please be prepared for it on the day of your return to school. We also reviewed the Present Tense of the verb ESTAR (text p. 189) and its uses of health, location and temporary condition. This evening's assignment is Ex. C from text p. 186/187. Oral Proficiency Test on Thursay, 5/18, text p. 185 thru 190. 12/5/06: Students took the C. 7 Writing/Grammar Test. If you were absent today, please be prepared to make this up on the day of your return to school. 11/5/06: Today we learned vocab from text p. 173. We did Ex. A/B/C from text pages 174/175/176. We also read the cultural commentary from text p. 174. Tomorrow there will be a WRITING/GRAMMAR TEST ONLY on C. 7, pages 157 thru 181. Students were given the format of the test. if you were absent today, please be prepared to take this test tomorrow! 10/5/06: C. 14 Writing/Grammar Tests were returned and reviewed and collected for filing. Afterwards we reviewed pages 164 thru 171 by checking the handout which uses material from these textbook pages. Students are responsible for all material from pages 157 thru 171. C. 7 Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar Tests will be on Friday, 5/12. 8/5/06: Today we went over text p. 164, the dialogue as well as the vocab at the bottom of the page. Then we did Ex. A from text p. 165 and we put it on the chalkboard for correction. Students learned the words barrio and la calle and la avenida. We then did Ex. B on p. 165/166. We read the cultural commentary on answerin the phone in Spain, Mexico and S.A. Study. Complete Ex. G/H/I on handout distributed in c lass today! 4/5/06: We began class by putting Ex. B from handout p. 83 on the chalkboard for correction. We then proceded to review the vocab from text p. 157. Next we went over worksheet Ex. D, p. 85 to review the present tennse of IR. Then we reviewed vocab for always, everyday and sometimes before learning 4 new expressions of frequency and their placement in sentences (text p. 161/162). We did Ex. G, text p. 162 and put it on the chalkboard for correction. We did Ex. E from handout p.85 and we put it on the chalkboard for correction. Study pages 156 thru 163. C. 7 Test, both Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar will be next week. 3/5/06: Today we went over new vocab from text p. 157. We also reviewed the Present Tensed of IR, the contraction al and the difference between donde and adonde as well as ESTAR (to be) used for location. We did Ex. A, B, C, D and F from text p. 158, 159 and 161. We did Ex. A from handout p. 83 (distributed in class on Tuesday). This evening's assignment is to study p. 157 thru 161. The C. 7 Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar Test will be the end of next week. Students who have C. 14 make ups were told when the make up would be. 28/4/06: Today we reviewed for Monday's C. 14 Writing/Grammar Test on pages 328 thru 347. Students were given the format of this test. If you were absent today, you will take this test on Monday so prepare for it. If you were absent on Thursday and Friday, you will take your test on Thursday so that you have an opportunity to get notes from Thursday. STUDY! 27/4/06: Students learned how to do sequencing in Spanish (text p. 344). We did Ex. I from text p. 344/345 as an oral exercise. We then did Ex.H from workbook p. 185/186/187 as a written exercise and we put this on the board for correction. Students also learned how to express immediate future (Present Tense of IR + A + infinitive)--I'm going to write a book--Voy a escribir un libro. This evening's assignment is to study p. 328 thru 347 for Monday's Writing/Grammar Test. 26/4/06: Quizzes from yesterday were returned, reviewed and collected for filing. Next we put last evening's assignment on the chalkboard for correction. We then reviewed the CAR verb spelling rule and we added SACAR to the 3 CAR words which we already learned. We did Ex. G from text p. 343 verbally. Finally we did Ex. G from workbook p. 184 and we put this on the chalkboard for correction. This evening's assignment is to study this material. C. 14 Writing/Grammar Test on Monday, May 1. 25/4/06: We began class by taking the quiz on text p. 329 thru 336. Afterwards we learned new vocabulary from text pages 338/339. We did Ex. A from text p. 339 verbally. Student are to study this new vocab and to complete Ex. B from text p. 340. Test on C. 14 (Writing/Grammar Test only) on Monday, May 1. 24/4/06: Today students learned how to express the "ago expressions", text p. 332/333. We also learned how to ask the question "How long ago" (Cuanto hace que...). We reviewed the periods of time in the blue box at the top of text p. 333. We did Ex. D from p. 333 orally. We wrote out Ex. E from text p. 333 and we put it on the chalkboard for correction. Next we did Ex. G from text p. 334 and we put this on the chalkboard for correction. This material will be included on tomorrow's quiz from text p. 329 thru 336. Study! 20/4/06: Today we crossed the murky waters of the Atlantic and took a trip to the capital city of Spain, Madrid. The video gave an overview of interesting sights, the madrilenos, the flamenco dance, etc. The quiz on pages 329 thru 336 will be moved to Tuesday, 4/25, because of the 9th grade fieldtrip. 19/4/06: Today we learned vocabulary from text p. 329/330/331. We learned how to put all verbs from these pages into both the Present and the Preterite Tenses. This evening's assignment is to study the new vocab found on these pages. The quiz on pages 329 thru 336 will be moved to Tuesday, 4/25, because of the 9th grade fieldtrip tomorrow. 13/4/06: Students watched a viedo entitled EASTER IN SPAIN". Afterwards tests from C. 13 were returned, reviewed and collected for filing. If you must make up this test, be prepared for it on the day of your return to school. 12/4/06: C. 13 Writing/Grammar Test was taken today. If you were absent, be prepared to take this on the day of your return to school! 11/4/06: Today we reviewed pages 301 thru 325 for tomorrow's C. 13 Writing/Grammar Test. We also added spelling change preterites: Gar-text p. 335; Car-text p. 343 and Zar-C to c before an e. Be sure to study vocab from text p. 301/302/304/306/310/312/314/318. If you were absent today, be sure you are prepared for this test on the day of your return to school! 10/4/06: We began class by doing a reading comprehension exercise from workbook p. 168/169. Afterwards we listened to a dialogue from text p. 318. We then translated this dialogue from Spanish into English. In period 3, students learned how to deal with spelling-change preterites--GAR verbs: G to gue before an e; CAR verbs: C to que before an e; ZAR verbs: Z to c before an e. This material will be inclued on Wed. C. 13 Writing/Grammar Test--p. 301 thru 325. 7/4/06: We began class by reviewing the Preterite of TENER/ESTAR/ANDAR. Next we checked last evening's assignment, Ex. F from text p. 322. We then learned new vocab from text p. 311. We also went over the dialogue from text p. 310. This evening's assignment is to study p. 301 thru 325 for Wed. C. 13 Writing/Grammar Test! 6/4/06: We began class by checking yesterday's assignment, Ex. Q from handout p. 175. Afterwards students learned the Preterite Tense of the infinitives tener/estar/andar (text p. 322). We did handout p. 176 to reinforce this material. This evening's assignment is Ex. F from text p. 322--give the English of the original sentences and write 6 new Spanish sentences for #1, 6 Spanish new sentences for # 2, and 5 new Spanish sentences for # 3. C. 13 Writing/Grammar Test (p. 301 thru 325) will be on WEd., 4/12/06. 5/4/06: We began class by reviewing the Preterite Tense of IR. Afterwards we went over Ex. M from handout p. 171 and we then put Ex. G from text p. 315/316 on the chalkboard for correction. We went over expressions associated with the Preterite (text p. 320) and we then did Ex. F from handout p. 174 (distributed in class today). We put this on the chalkboard for correction. This evening's assignment is Ex. Q from handout p. 175 as well as to study pages 301 thru 321. C. 13 Writing/Grammar Test (p. 301 thru 325) will be on WEd., 4/12/06. 4/4/06: Today we began class by reviewing the Preterite Tense of regular Er/Ir verbs. We then checked Ex. K from worksheet p. 170 and Ex. L from worksheet p. 170/171, #1, 4, 5. Afterwards we reviewed the Present Tense of to go (IR), the words donde and adonde and the difference between the two, IR A + infinitive. Then we learned the Preterite Tense of IR (text p. 312). We did Ex. A and in two classes Ex. B as well from text p. 312 and 313. This evening's assignment is Ex. G from text p. 315/316, study IR in the Preterite. Be sure to have your packets with you tomorrow. C. 13 Writing/Grammar Test (p. 301 thru 325) will be on WEd., 4/12/06. 3/4/06: C. 17 Oral Proficiency Tests and the AR Preterite quiz were returned, reviewed and collected for filing. Afterwards we reviewed the Preterite Tense of Ar and Er infinitives and we added the Preterite of IR infinitives along with three new Ir infiitives--asistir a (to attend), salir (to leave), salir de (to leave from), salir con (to go out with). This evening's assignment is to study all of this material. Have your textbooks and packet with you tomorrow! C. 13 Writing/Grammar Test (p. 301 thru 325) will be on WEd., 4/12/06. 30/3/06: Students began class by taking the quiz on text pages 301/302/304/306/320/321. Afterwards, students learned 2 new ER infinitives (perder and volver) and the Preterite Tense of ER words (text p. 314). We did Ex. J of packet p. 169 and Ex. L of packet p. 170, # 2 and 3. These packets were distributed in class today. This evening's assignment is to study p. 314--Er Preterites. C. 13 Test will be next week. 29/3/06: Students learned words and phrases that will use the Preterite Tense (text p. 320/321). We did a handout which used the Preterite of Regular AR infinitives, the Irregular Preterite HACER and the new vocab presented today. This evening's assignment is to study p. 301, 302, 304, 306, 320, 321 for tomorrow's quiz. If you were absent, please be prepared to take this quiz on the day of your return to school. 28/3/06: All three sections will take the quiz on pages 301, 302, 304, 320, 321 on Thrusday because of my PM absence yesterday. Today we reviewed the Preterite Tense of HACER and the five hacer expressions presented on text p. 306. We put workbook exercises which correspond to text pages 301, 302, 304, 306 on board for correction. 24/3/06: Period 3: We began class by putting Ex. B from workbook p. 164 on the chalkboard for correction. We then reviewed the Preterite Tense of AR verbs along with the words ayer and anoche. Then we put Ex. C from workbook p. 164 on the chalkboard for correction. We put Ex. G from text p. 307 on the chalkboard for correction as well. Students completed Ex. D from workbook p. 165. We then went over this in class. This evening's assignment is to study pages 301/302/304 and to complete Text p. 305-Ex. E according to instructions given in class. Next quiz will be on Thurs., 3/30. It will cover pages 301, 302, 304, 320, 321. Periods 5 and 6: We began class by checking last evening's assignment and by reviewing the Preterite Tense of regular AR verbs. There is no writing/grammar test for this chapter! 16/3/06: Period 3: We began class by listening to a reading from text p. 408 and 409. After going over the new vocab, studnets translated the story from Spanish into English. We then went over the English translation. Next we read and discussed trhe cultural commentary from text p. 409. This evening's assignment is to study the new vocab and to complete Ex. a (complete sentence answers) and B (complete sentence answers) from text page 410. C. 17 Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar Test on Tuesday, 3/21/06. Periods 5 and 6: We began class by doing Ex. I from workbook p. 229/230 to reinforce vocab presented yesterday from pages 408/409. We put this on the chalkboard for correction. Next we went over the English translation of the dialogue from text p. 408/409. We then checked Ex. A and B from text p. 410 completed for homework last evening (we put this on the chalkboard). We also reviewed the days of the week and the fact that el and los before the days of the week means on. We did Ex. J from workbook page 230 and we will put this on the chalkboard tomorrow. This evening's assignment is to study pages 408/409. C. 17 Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar Test will be on Tuesday, March 21. 15/3/06: We began class by taking the quiz on pages 400-405 + 412/413. In Period 3, students watched video "SWEET 15. In other sections: Afterwards we went over the dialogue from text p. 408/409. This evening's assignment is to study the new vocab from text p. 408/409. Periods 5 and 6 should also have the translation of the p. 408/409 dialogue, Ex. A and B from p. 410 ready for tomorrow. C. 17 Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar Test on Tuesday, 3/21/06. 14/3/06: We began class by reviewing the boot verbs costar, querer and preferir. We also reviewed the demonstrative adjectives and demonstrative pronouns (text p. 400 thru 405 + 412/413). Afterwards we checked Ex. G (last evening's assignment) from text p. 413/414 by putting it on the chalkboard. We then did Ex. L from workbook p. 232 and we put it on the chalkboard for correction. E from text p. 403 on the chalkboard for correction. We reviewed demonstrative adjectives. Next we put workbook exercise D from p. 224 on the chalkboard for correction. We reviewed the concept of a boot verb and we added the infinitive PREFERIR (IE). We did Ex. F from text p. 403 and we put this on the board for correction. E from text p. 403. 6/3/06: Today students learned the Spanish vocabulary words for all fruits (las frutas) and vegetables (las verduras/los vegetales) pictured in Ex. A and B from text pages 400/401. We did Ex. A and B and we put these on the chalkboard for correction. Afterwards we read and discussed the cultural commentary from text p. 400. Students learned the word CUANTO (how much) and the Present Tense of the boot verb COSTAR (UE)(students will be using cuesta=it costs and cuestan=they cost. Periods 5 and 6: Today we began learning the vocab from text pages 77/78. We learned the Present Tense and English meaning of the verb LLEVAR and we learned the Indefinite and Definite Articles which precede each noun on p. 76. We did Ex. A from text p. 78 and we put this on the chalkboard for correction. Next we did Ex. B from text p. 78 and we will put this on the chalkboard tomorrow. This evening's assignment is to study p. 77/78. HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL! 23/11/05: Students in all sections went to the library to work on "Talking Turkey" in Spanish. Students were given a handout with 33 English to Spanish multiple choice Spanish anwers. Using English to Spanish/Spanish to English dictionaries and worki ng in pairs or groups of three, they were to come up with the correct response. About 6 minutes towards the end of the period, they were given a handout with 10 illustrations relating to Thanksgiving. Using the handout which they completed, they were to come up with the correct responses. This was a graded activity. Period 3: C. 3 Test, both Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar, will be on Monday, 12/05. 21/11/05: PERIOD 3: We took our quiz on pages 47 thru 59 at the beginning of class today. Afterwards we learned the nouns of profession (text p. 60/61) and their forms. Get notes if you were absent. The concept of adjective agreement was reviewed and the fact that SER is used not only for origin but for nationality was explained. Students did p. 27 in the packet and we put it on the chalkboard for correction. We learned that there are 2 words used for where--DONDE and ADONDE. Because ADONDE is used with verbs of motion, ADONDE is used to ask where with any form of the verb to go. We did sentences in class to practice all the concepts mentioned above. This evening's assignment is to study the Present Tense of IR. We then reviewed both the Present and Past Tenses of the verb Gustar along with emphatic and clarification forms. We read the first page introduction aloud. Then students needed to read A Family Outing on EL Dia de los Muertos. Afterwards, they had to complete a vocbaulary exercise on words associated with this holiday. We went over most but not all of this exercise so we will complete this tomorrow after the quiz on Gustar. We reviewed the Present and Past Tense forms of Gustar. Afterwards the emphatic forms of me, te, nos, os were presented as well as the clarifiation forms of le and les. Then we added emphatic/clarifiction forms to # 13, 19, 5, 4, 10, 18, 7, 11, 9, 12, 16, 20 of Ex. D. Finally we learned how to deal with sentences containing nouns: Example--Juan likes peanuts. Students were given a review packet. We completed the first page which provided examples of the grammar sections on tomoorw's test. We also did Actividad 1, page 15 in the packet. Students were given the format of the Writing/Grammar Tes: Part 1: Write sentence in spanish using verb in a person followed by the infinitive. Part 2: Answer questions in complete Spanish sentences using the "to have just done something" expression. Part 3: Read Spanish story and then answer English True/False statements. Part 4: Be able to explain what a bar de tapas is/ when the Spaniards go there/ the types of food one will find there/ etc. Study C. 2 for both the Oral Proficiency Test and Writing/Grammar Test which will be given tomorrow! 14/10/05: Today we reviewed for Tuesday's C. 2 Oral Proficiency Test on pages 27 thru 43. In Part 1, students will have to identify picutes of the Tapas that we studied on text page 27. They will hear a tapa said in Spanish; they will have to find the illustration which matches, write the Spanish word on the line underneath that picture while spelling the Spanish word correctly. In Part 2, students will hear 4 dialogues. They will need to tell if the dialogues are Formal or Familiar. Finally in Part 3, students will need to complete a dialogue, writing the Spanish words which are missing on the line provided, spelling each word correctly. We did three exercises with the C. 2 Tape to become familiar with the voices students will hear on the C.2 Testing Tape. Study pages 27 thru 43. We'll review for the the C. 2 Writing/Grammar Test on Monday! 13/10/05: We began class by reading in Spanish and then translating the statment "Acabo de tomar unos refrescos." We then learned the acabar de + infinitive expression (p. 39). We did Ex. I on handout p. 21 to reinforce this and we put it on the board for correction. We then reviewed the present tense of desear + infinitive, me gusta + infinitive, quisiera and quisieras (you would like) + infinitive and necesitar + infinitive (text p. 39/40). We did exercises pages 22 thru 24. We corrected all except Ex. M--we'll put this on the board tomorrow-by putting the sentences on the chalkboard. This evening's assignment is to study pages 39/40 of text, pages 21 thru 24 of handout, and notes. C. 2 Test will be Tuesday--both Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar. 12/10/05: We began class by going over Hola, Que tal?, Como estas?, Como te va?, Te presento a. We established that these are familiar forms. We then listened to, repeated and translated from Spanish into English the dialogue on text pages 36/37. We aded the formal forms Buenos dias, Buenas tardes, Buenas noches, Como esta Ud., Como estan Uds., Quisiera presentarle a , Quisiera presentarles a. We also learned that the definite article goes before a title when one talks about someone with a title. We added the words estoy, encantado/a, igualmente. We also reead and discussed the cultural commentary from text page 37. This evening's assignment is to study the material from pages 36/37. Chapter 2 Test--both Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar--will be Tuesday, 18/10/05. 11/10/05: We began class by putting this sentence ED Y ANDY ESCUCHAN MUCISCA CLASICA into question form through voice inflection, end question and inversion. Afterwards we reviewed all three methods and we checked Ex. E and G from handout pages 16, 17, 18,19 (done for homework) by putting the questions on the chalkboard. We also reviewed the method of answering questions both affirmatively and negatively. We then put answers to the questions from Ex. E and G (up above) on the chalkboard for correction. Students are rsponsible for all material presented from text pages 3 thru 34. This evening, they should focus on studying pages 32, 33, 34. C. 2 Oral Proficiency Test and Writing/Grammar Test on Monday, 10/17/05. 10/10/05: Group quizzes from Friday were returned, reviewed and collected for filing. Afterwards, we learned the three methods for forming questions in Spanish (text pages 32, 33, top 0f 34). We did Ex. I and J on text page 33 according to the directions in the text and then we re-did Ex. J using the inversion format. We put answers to Ex. J, both end question format and inversion format, on the chalkboard for correction. This evening's asignment is Ex. E on handout p. 16 and 17 (follow instructions and model) and Ex. G on handout pages 18/19 (follow instructions and model but do add an end question for each one as well). All students are to be prepared for this test! 29/9/05: We began class by reviewing Vamos a comer algo. We then added Yo Voy a comer algo(I'm going to eat something) and Tu vas a comer algo (You-fam s- are going to eat something). Next we did Ex. A from text p. 16 orally. Then we did Ex. H from handout p. 9 to review the illustrations that we worked with in this chapter. Finally, we did a listening comprehension exercise with the tape player. Students were given the format of tomorrow's C. 1 Oral Proficiency Test and they were told to focus on the meaning and spelling of words from text pages 22/23. All students are expected to be prepared for this Oral Proficiency whether or not they were in class today as no new material was covered. We began class by learning the meaningof the words LAS COMIDAS (meals/foods) and then we read and discussed the culture unit on text p. 20. Next we learned all new vocab from text p. 15 (we included chorizo--a Spanish sausage). We went over the dialogue at the bottom of the page as well as the scripts describing bocadillo and pan dulce. Next each student slected a roll to portray in the skit of Mexican Independence Day. Afterwards we reviewed for tomorrow's Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grmmar tests on pages 46 thru 64 + notes + handouts. If you were absent today, you are expected to be prepared for these tests tomorrow! 10/12/04: We began class by taking the quiz on pages 46 through 61. Afterwards we began reviewing for Tuesday's Chapter 3 Oral Proficiency Test. The teacher dictatred 10 questions in Spanish and students needed to write complete Spanish sentence answers to each. We then put these on the chalkboard for correction. There is a section similar to this on Tuesday's Oral Proficiency. 9/12/04: We began class by going over activity sheet handout p. 25 and Ex. D from the last page in this packet. Next we went over the vocab from text p. 56. We translated the dialogue from Spanish into English. We also did Ex. A and B from text p. 57. Study pages 46 through 61 for tomorrow's quiz. If you were absent today, be sure to go over p. 56 dialogue because you ar responsible for this material and it is on tomorrow's quiz which you will be taking, whether or not you were here today! 8/12/04: Students completed the second page in the handout on professions. They then corrected this by checking their answers with those on a transparency. Then students did Ex. F from text p. 61 as a written assignment, following the model given in the book. We will go over handout pages 25 and 27 tomorrow as well as Ex. F from p. 61. Quiz on Friday --pages 46 thru 61. C. 3 Test, both Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar on Tuesday of next week. 7/12/04: Today we learned nouns of profession, text p. 60. We also added alumno, maestro and hombre/mujer de negocios. We learned how to put each of these into their MS, MPL, FS, FPL form. We did the first page in the handout which was given in class today. This evening, in addition to studying the vocabulary presented today and the rules of usage associated with this vocab, you must do Ex. D which is on the last page of today's packet. Quiz on Friday, pages 47 thru 61. Study! There is a significant amount of vocab to study! 6/12/04: We began class by reviewing the Present Tense of Ser + De donde+ the forms of adjectives of nationality. Then we checked Friday's assignment (verbally). Next we did Ex. H from worksheet handout page 32 and we put it on the board for corrction. Finally we checked Ex. D from text p. 59 (done in class on Thursday) by putting it on the chalkboard. In Period 6, we went over Ex. E from text p. 59 also. This evening's assignment is to study pages 47 thru 59 inclusive. There will be a quiz on Thursday or Friday and it will cover pages 47 thru 61. Because there is a tremendous amount of vocabulary in this chapter, it is important to study each evening! Chapter 3 Test will be early next week. 3/12/04: We began class by going over adjective agreement and adjective forms. Then we checked the grid on the pink handout (we did this in class on Wed.) and we put the answers to p. 27 from the handout on the book for correction. Then we corrected the crossword puzzle which was done in class on Wed. by comparing to the answers on a transparency. Finally, students were given a handout on Hispanic contries and nationalities. This must be completed by Monday. 1/12/04:Today students were given their first quarter grades. They were also provided with an explanation of how these grades were determined. Afterwards we checked Ex. I from text p. 55 by putting it on the chalkboard. Then we learned how to deal with adjectives of nationality (text p. 58/59). We did the first page of a worksheet packet here in class. Students will finish the last two pages in class tomorrow. This evening's assignment is to study adjectives of nationality vocabulary from text pages 58/59 and to study the notes taken in class. 30/11/04: We began class with an oral review of ser. Then we did the exercise at the top of worksheet p. 27. Next we did Ex. C at the bottom of worksheet p. 27 and we put it on the chalkboard for correction. We also learned De Donde and then did Ex. G from text p. 53 orally. This evening's assignment is Ex. I from text p. 55. Quizzes from Tues., 11/23, were returned, reviewed and collected for filing. 29/11/04: Today students watched the video "Marisela" because I was not in school. They will sese the conclusion on Friday. 23/11/04: We began class by taking the quiz on the map of Hispanic countries + capitals. Afterwards we began to review and use the verb SER by doing the exercise at the top of worksheet p. 27 (pink). Tomorrow we will report to the library to work on a Thanksgiving project. 22/11/04 Today we began class by going over maps of Mexico, Central America, the islands of Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and South America. Becuase there will be a quiz on this tomorrow(including capitals of each country), students must study their maps + capitals of these Spanish-speaking countries. Afterwards, we began to learn the Present Tense of the verb SER (text p. 52). 19/11/04: We began class by learning the vocabulary words PAISES HISPANOHABLANTES. Then students went to the library and completed a map of Mexico, Central and South America where they located all of the Spanish-speaking countries and their capitals. There will be a quiz on this on Tuesday, Nov. 23. 18/11/04: Quizzes from yesterday were returned and reviewed. Then we went over the vocabulary and grammar rom pages 47/48/49. We completed all exercises on these pages and we corrected the translation which was done for homework last evening. Study pages 47/48/49. Quiz next Tuesday -- maps of the Spanish-speaking countries as well as the capitals of these countries. 17/11/04: We began class by taking our quiz on GUSTAR. Afterwards we learned the vocab from p. 48 which relates to LA COMIDA MEXICANA. Please be sure you understand Que va a pedir? This evening's assignment is p. 47--translate dialogue from Spanish into English. 16/11/04: Today we completed our study of the verb GUSTAR, including its Present Tense and its Past Tense, emphatic and clarification forms. Study the GUSTAR handout thoroughly and go over your notes for tomorrow's quiz! 15/11/04: We began class with a review of the verb gustar. Then we learned its past tense forms. In Period 6, we put Ex. C on the chalkboard for correction. Then we learned how to emphasize and clarify. Students then went back to worksheet and did Ex. D adding the emphatic and clarification forms for each sentence. In Period 9, we put Ex. D, # 1 thru 10, on the chalkboard for correction but we did not have time to add emphatic and clarification forms so we will do this tomorrow. Quiz on Wed.--verb GUSTAR! Study pages 27 thru 43 + the 2 packets and notes. If you are still having difficulty with any part of Chapter 1, you must go back and review it in order to guarantee success on these tests tomorrow. 9/11/04: After reviewing necesitar, desear, quisiera, me gusta + infinitive, students leanred the ACABAR DE + infinitive expression. We then checked Ex. I from pink worksheet pages 21 and 22. We also learned how to answer questions using acabar de. Then we learned that the definite article is placed before a title when someone is spoken ABOUT(p. 36: el senor and la senora). We discussed the difference between formal and familiar and we read and discussed the cultural commentary from text p. 37. This evening's assignment is to translate the dialogue from text p. 37 into English. Chapter 2 Test--both Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar--on Thursday, 11/11. Study pages 27 thru 43 + 2 packets + notes. 8/11/04: Today we began class by reiewing necesitar followed by an infinitive. Then we did Ex. M from p. 24 in the pink packet, only Felipe's part, and we put this on the chalkboard for correction. Then we reviewed the verb DESEAR and the fact that it is often followed by an infinitive. We did Ex. J and Ex. L from worksheet pages 22/23 to practice this concept. Next we reviewed yo quisiera and we added tu quisieras and el/ell quisiera. These words are often followed by infinitives as wee. We did Ex. M, handout p. 24 (marcos's part)and we put this on the board for correction. Then we reviewed me gusta and te gusta. They are often followed by infinitives as well. We did Ex. K from worksheet p. 22/23 and we put this on the board for correction. Finally we learned acabar de. This evening's assignment is Ex. I from handout p. 21. Chapter 2 Test, both Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar--will be Thursday,11/11. 5/11/04: We began class by going over Actividad 4, p. 18. Afterwards we checked the last two pages of the green packet. On Thursday, 11/11, there will be a Chapter 2 Test--both Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar. 3/11/04: We began class by checking Activity Sheet # 1, p. 15. Then we learned the verb NECESITAR (to need) and we put it into the Spanish Present Tense. We also learned that when you have 2 verbs back to back, the first one is conjugated and the second remains in infinitive form (get notes if you were absent). Finally we broke into groups of three. Each group was assigned sentences from Activity Sheet #4, p.18, with which to make questions. We will pick up here tomorrow. C. 2 Test will be on Wed., 11/10/04--both the oral proficiency and the writing and grammar. 2/11/04: We began class today by reviewing the three ways of forming a question. Then we checked Ex. I from p. 33--we used inversion for this. Next we did Ex. E from worksheet pages 16/17. We put this on the chalkboard for correction. Then we did Ex. G from worksheet pages 18/19 and we put this on the board for correction. This evening's assignment is Activity Sheet 1, page 15 (from the green packet). C. 2 Test early next week. 1/11/04: We began class by completing a handout on the Day of the Dead. We then went over the vocabulary on this sheet and discussed how this holiday is celerated in Mexico. We focused on the word "calavera" and students then made their own calavera. If it was not finished in class, students need to show the completed project to me first thing tomorrow in order to receive credit. 29/10/04:(Friday) Today we watched a video entitled THE DAY OF THE DEAD". Students were given a handout which they needed to complete while watching the video. This handout was collected and will be graded as a quiz. 28/10/04:(Thursday) We began class by reading the story from p. 45 in Spanish. Then we checked our assignment which was to translate this story into English. Next we learned how to form questions in Spanish (text pages32 and 33). We did Ex. I on p. 33 orally using voice inflection. We also Ex. J from pages 33/34 as a written exercise. We put this written exercise on the chalkboard for correction.l This evening's assignemnt is Ex. I from text p. 33--students must form questions using the processd of inversion. Chapter 2 Test--end of next week or the beginning of the folowing week. 27/10/04: We began class by going over the names of the Tapas presented on p. 27 of text. We used a transparency in order to do this. We reviewed Indefinite Articles and then presented Definite Articles. We checked Ex. A fromp. 28 and then we put definite articles before each word in this exercise. We also did Ex. B from p. 28 orally. Packets for C. 2 were then handed out. Students completed Ex. A and B from handout pages 14/15. This evening's assignment is to study pages 27, 28 and 29 and to translate the story on text page 45 into English. 26/10/04 Chapter 1 Oral Proficiency Tests and Writng/Grammar Tests were returned, reviewed and collected for filing. 25/10/04: Today we learned about LAS TAPAS ESPANOLAS (text p, 27). Students were given a handout with 8 questions regarding TAPAS. They were to complete this handout while watching a video about LAS TAPAS. Then we went over the TAPAS found on p. 27 of the text for repetition and meaning. This evening's assignment is to complete Ex. A from text p. 28 and to study new vocab. 22/10/04: Today we took our 1st writing/grammar test. If you were absent, please be prepared to take this during your study period on the dya of your return to school. 21/10/04: Today we took our first oral proficiency test. It encompassed pages 3 thru 23 + 31 + notes. Tomorrow we will take our 1st Writing/Grammar Test on this same material. Students wee given the format of the test! 20/10/04: We began class by putting Ex. H from worksheet p. 9 on the chalkboard for correction. Then we went over the vocabulary from p. 15 and we added Vas a comer alog and Voy a comer. We did Ex. A from text p. 16 orally. Finally we read the cultural commentary from p. 20. The C. 1 Oral Proficiency Test will be tomorrow. Becuase of the Activity Period schedule, the writing/grammar test will be Friday. It will cover pages 3 thru 23 + page 31 + notes. The format of these tests was shared with the students! 19/10/04: We began class by doing Ex. G fromp. 12 orally. We then reviewed Indefinite Articles and moved on to the new vocab presented on p. 15. Using transparencies, we learned the new vocab. We listened to a taped reading of the dialogue from p. 15 and then called on several students to repeat it. We did Ex. H from handout p. 9. We will put this on the chalkboard at the beginning of class tomorrow. Tomorrow we will review C. 1 + p. 31 for Thursday's Oral Proficiency and Writing/Grammar Tests. Study! 18/10/04: We began class by going over the vocbaulary from pages 9 and 10. Then we did Ex. a from text p. 10 orally. We reviewed the pluralization of nouns, the indefinite articles and the gender of nouns (p. 12). We did Ex. F from text p. 12 and we put worksheet exercises E and F on the chalkboard for correction. This evenings's assignment is to study pages 9 thru 13. Chapter 1 Test will be Thursday rather than Wed.! 15/10/04: 1. We began class by learning the phrase VAMOS A UN CAFE. Then we read about the importance of Cafes in the Hispanic world (p. 13). Next we listened to a reading of the dialogue from text p. 9 and we translated it into English afterwards. We also went over Unas Bebidas Calientes and Unas Bebidas Frias from text p. 10. Gramatically speaking, we reviewed the gender of nouns and the indefinite articles un, una, and unas. We will pick up here on Monday. Today's assignment is to study pages 9 thru 13. Students need to study all new material because on Wed. of next week there will be both an oral proficiency test and writing/grammar test on Chapter 1, pages 3 thru 23 + page 31. 14/10/04: The substitute assigned the following work which will be correted tomorrow. Students read "ESTRUCTURA" from text p. 12. They then wrote out Ex. F and G from text p. 12 following the model given. Then they translated the dialogue from text p. 9 into Englsih. Afterwards, they wrote the vocabulary words underneath each illustration (p. 10)in both Spanish and English. Finally they completd Ex. A from p. 10. 13/10/04: Today we began class with a review of me gusta, no me gusta, te gusta, --si, me gusta, --no, no me gusta. We did the exercise at the top of p. 7 orally (students gave truthful answers) and then we did Ex. B from pages 4/5 of our packet. Next we added the adverbs mucho, muchisimo, poco, muy poco (p.7). We did Ex. C from text p. 7 orally. For written practice, we did Ex. C from worksheet page 5, putting it on the chalkboard for correction. We summarized by watching the video "ME GUSTA".
