¡Bienvenidos!  Welcome to Spanish 2!  I am very pleased to have this opportunity to expand your Spanish language!
Learning Spanish is your most important task this year!  A recent statistic estimates that there are 41.3 million Hispanics in the United States, about 14% of the population, which have come from over 22 Spanish speaking countries in the world. (Time Magazine Vol. 166, No. 8, August 22, 2005)

Before we begin to learn Spanish, let’s examine the three R’s:

As your teacher, it is my RESPONSIBILITY to…
o Behave in a way that shows RESPECT for myself, others, the environment, property, time and rules.
o Behave in a way that encourages positive RESULTS.
o Provide a physically and emotionally safe learning environment.
o Design appropriate learning opportunities in order to maximize your time and opportunities to learn Spanish!

It is your RESPONSIBILITY to behave in a way that shows RESPECT for yourself, others and the values lived out by the entire St. Charles East community.

It is your Responsibility to behave in a way that encourages positive RESULTS by:
o Participating in class work
o Working with your classmates in a productive and cooperative manner.
o Asking questions (There is never a dumb question and even if I do not know the answer I will find out for you!)
o Practicing Spanish outside of the classroom.  (Yes, this means doing your homework and more.)

SÉ AMABLE                      BE NICE
ECHALE GANAS                WORK HARD

Other Classroom Values:
o All students have the right to feel comfortable in my class. Absolutely no put-downs to other students, negative or offensive language.
o Disrespect, tardiness, use of cell phone or IPod damage classroom, and damage to furniture or property will not be tolerated and offences will result in teacher detentions, phone calls home, and dean referrals.
o Offenses for tardiness/disruptive behavior/use of electronics:  1st-Warning, 2nd-Teacher detention, 3rd-Phone Call Home, 4th-Dean Referral
o In order to help you participate in class, please no gum, food or drinks, no hats, jackets, cell phones or IPods.  These rules will be strictly enforced.

WORD PROCESSING TIPS
Standard Microsoft Word software has Spanish spelling and grammar check.  In order to change the language, follow these steps:
Tools
Spelling & Grammar
Language
Set language
Spanish Traditional Sort
This tool can help you when you word process in Spanish but you should always be conscious of spelling and grammar as you will not always be able to word process your writing in Spanish, especialmente en el Examen AP!

For Accents and other Spanish Writing Points:
When in doubt you can always use “Insert Symbol”, which can be long and tedious.  Many of you are probably aware of the way you can add accents with the number codes (which I never learned and find cumbersome also…) So here’s my way that has become second nature after practice: Note: If I wrote the command in [BRAQUETS] this means to hold the keys down simultaneously.
For an áccént on vowels:
[CTRL + APPOSTROPHY], then your letter.
For an accent on a CÁPÍTÁL vowel, it’s the same:
[CTRL + APPOSTROPHY], but then [SHIFT + the Letter].
For an upside down question mark (¿) or exclamation point (¡):
[CTRL + SHIFT + ALT], then [SHIFT + ? or SHIFT + !]
For ñ or Ñ:
[CTRL + SHIFT + ~], than n or N
For ü (dieresis or the two dots):
I do insert symbol.  (Many times spell-check will auto-correct this for you.)
