Dear Parents, My goal in teaching Spanish has always been to create a safe atmosphere. Learning a second language is not an easy thing emotionally. Students can feel self-conscious about their lack of ability and will thus be reluctant to use the language. My job in teaching a second language is to create a safe and supportive environment, one in which the student will be comfortable experimenting with the language. That means that laughing at or putting down others can not be tolerated in any way, shape, or form. This is in keeping with our Silver Boxes program and our school philosophy. ADVANCED SPANISH The only instance in which the teaching of grammar can result in second language acquisition (and proficiency) is when the students are interested in the subject and the target language is used as a medium of instruction. That being said, I teach grammar, colloquialisms, history and have the students read, participate in class, and do homework. Each student advances at their own pace and I use differentiated instruction as do my colleagues, in order to reach every student. Dear Students, I encourage all of you to play these games, it is a fun way to learn a second language and you will improve your performance in class participation. Thank you, Ms. Marina Saavedra
