Course Description
EMT is a 36 week program. Students learn to administer first-aid treatments and life support care to sick or injured persons in pre-hospital setting. Instruction is given in operating equipment such as EKGs, external defibrillators and bag-valve mask resuscitators in advanced life-support environments. Students learn emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, and communicate with dispatcher and treatment center personnel. Students will participate in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) where special emphasis is placed employability as well as leadership skills.
Course Objectives
The student who successfully completes this course will have knowledge and skills that can be used in several different health care careers. Completion of this program prepares students for the state EMT examination.
Instructional Philosophy
This course will consist of lecture, class discussion, demonstrations, computer lessons, and practice of skills. Students will work with partners much of the time. Assignments will require students to use mathematical, science, communication, and language art skills.
Grading Scale
Assessment will be based on scores achieved on written test, homework, projects, and daily grades. Daily grades will be given for attitude, performance of skills, productive use of class time, class participation, performing daily cleanup, and laboratory organization assignments. This course grading scale is 100-93 (A), 92-85 (B), 84-77 (C), 76-70 (D), below 70 (F).
Make-Up Assignments
Students will be required to make up any work missed due to absences in order to receive a passing grade for the day or days missed. It is the responsibility of the student to request make-up assignments. Ample opportunity will be given to turn in the makeup assignment. Make-up work not done by the scheduled date will result in a “0” for the day or days absent.
