EXAM will be an oral interpretation of two poems that reflect the theme of your 7th grade language arts experience with me. You are to memorize and practice the delivery of them with your peers and parents. Poems may be delivered one at a time or together: Your call! Poems will be delivered during exam week, starting Monday, June 7 and completed Wed. June 9. (Periods 5,7,8 do not meet Thursday because of Field Day, so will have to work on their end-of-year letters for homework, Tues. night.and submit on Wed.) Poem #1: THE ROAD NOT TAKEN by Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Poem #2: A Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? "Memorize yes, but LEARN from both: Language Arts lives outside this classroom door and the game is a'foot for your future. I'll be watching and expecting only your best efforts!
