The following syllabus will be provided for your convenience so that you may be reminded of deadlines as well as to provide study resources for BCIS. Wednesday, June 14 Beginning day procedures. Handouts: Syllabus, Summer School Student Handbook, Classroom contract with NISD acceptable usage of the Internet policy, Student Data Sheet and class Syllabus with TEKS objectives. Parents should sign the bottom of the Student Data sheet as well as the AUP from the Student Handbook if this has not already been done and it should be returned tomorrow. Quiz over the Classroom Contract rules tomorrow for a grade. Begin MicroType Pro lessons (saving on the network) with emphasis on correct typing procedure (typing by touch). Complete Lessons 1-6. Read chapter 1 in class. Study review questions and vocabulary words for exam and vocab quiz on Friday. Because of the short amount of time to cover an entire year-long course, we will be moving quickly and testing approximately once every 3 days. Study!!! Thursday, June 15 Computer Classroom Contract Quiz first thing this morning. MicroType Pro lessons 7-12 completed. Complete reading chapter 1 in the textbook and studying for exam and quiz. There are over 100 vocabulary words, so STUDY! Complete the Internet usage copyright worksheet. Study for exam and vocab quiz tomorrow over Lawrenceville chapter 1. Friday, June 16 Discuss spacing rules from the "Spacing with Punctuation" handout. Complete MicroType Pro lessons 13-19. Exam over chapter 1 and then vocabulary quiz over chapter 1. Read chapter 4 (Introducing the Word Processor) in class until break. After break, complete the "Spacing with Punctuation" worksheet, and then type Sample Personal Business Letter, Business Letter and Sample Memorandum with formatting marks. Study these letters and memo for an exam on Tuesday, June 20. Begin chapter 4 practices (Guided Practice) and exercises 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 (see Assignment Sheet handed out in class). Study Review Questions and vocabulary words for an exam on Thursday, June 22 after break. Have a great weekend!! Monday, June 19 Exam over Letters and Memos TOMORROW. Exam over chapter 4 and chapter 4 vocabulary quiz on Thursday, June 22. Continue chapter 4 in class. Each student will record their progress on the chapter assignment sheet. Exercises 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 13 will be completed by Tuesday, June 20 (tomorrow). Discuss the usage of the Drawing Toolbar and practice by creating a study sheet for chapter 4 on labeling the desktop as time allows. Tuesday, June 20 Review Letters and Memos as well as spacing rules briefly before taking exam. Exam covering Personal Business and Business Letters as well as Memorandums at beginning of class. Begin Keyboarding Skillbuilder on MicroType Pro. Complete Lessons A-D and save on the network print on the first page and turn in for a grade. You may not have more than 3 errors on the Paragraph (from the Lesson Report) or you will have to retype the Paragraph again. You may only retype the paragraph ONCE for the software to record your new grade. If you make MORE than 3 errors, retype and show me your WPM and errors BEFORE you clear the screen, or you will have to retype again. Complete your chapter 4 exercises before the end of class TODAY. Exam over chapter 4 and chapter vocab quiz on Thursday! Read chapter 5 as time allows. Wednesday, June 21 Keyboarding Skillbuilder Lessons E-H completed today. Print each Lesson Report (but Page 1 only). Complete reading chapter 5. Discuss chapter 5 in class and work through Practices together. Remember, all files that are requested to be opened in the textbook are in your DATA FILES folder in your name folder on the network. After opening the file, IMMEDIATELY save it in your Name WORD folder before you begin changing it. Begin Exercises: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 14. Please print each Lesson Report (Page 1 only) and turn it in for a grade. Review for the exam/vocab quiz and/or work on chapter 5 practices and exercises until the break. Exam and vocabulary quiz over chapter 4 after the break today. After the exam and quiz, continue working on any assignments for chapter 5 that are incomplete. Begin reading chapter 6 in class. We will be learning how to type the Business Letter with Special Features and a Sample Memorandum as well as Employment Documents. Gather your personal information (such as Personal or Job references) to include on a resume'. Exam over chapter 5 and vocabulary quiz on Monday. Friday, June 23 Keyboarding Skillbuilder Lessons M-P today. Continue reading chapter 6 in class. Complete the Business Letter with Special Features and Sample Memorandum. Review setting tabs (for the memorandum). Begin typing Employment letters and documents that will be given to you in a packet from Mrs. Staudt. Begin chapter 6 with practices. Monday, June 26 Keyboarding Skillbuilder Lessons Q-T today. You will only have FOUR more lessons to complete (Numeric Keypad). When you complete the lesson, you will print (from the Menu Bar...select REPORTS and then select SUMMARY REPORT. BEFORE you click OK, scroll down and see what page the numeric keypad is shown on and only print that copy.) This will complete the MicroType Pro lessons. The only time we will work on MicroType in the future will be to take 5-minute timed writings for a grade. Complete any missing assignments; the Scannable Resume should be completed by today and printed to be turned in for a grade. Begin the MiniLessons #1-4 Handout and complete. Save each "MiniLesson" as a separate assignment but do not print. Tuesday, June 27 From the Resume Handouts, review the Cover Letter in class. Read the example Cover Letter; today we will apply for a job supplied by the teacher. Select the job for which you will apply from the handout and prepare a Cover Letter for that job. The Human Resources person to whom you will address your letter will be Mrs. P. Staudt. Review your Resume' to see if the qualifications that you have highlighted match well with this job opening. If it is not a good match (assuming that you meet all requirements) then amend your resume' to highlight your skills that the position requires. Print both the Cover Letter and Resume, staple and turn in for a grade. Continue working on Chapter 6 Practices and Exercises: Practices 1-8 and Exercises 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Although there are quite a few practices and exercises, they do not have many requirements, therefore, be careful!! If an exercise only requires 3 steps, EACH step will be worth 33 points! Turn in your Chapter 6 Assignment Sheet when your work is complete. Study Review Questions and Vocabulary for chapter 6 for an exam on Friday. Wednesday, June 28 SENIOR MEETING at 9:30 in Library!! Practice Timed Writing #1 (through the Keyboarding Skillbuilder...go to the bottom to the check-mark icon on the right). Print the source copy (File>>Print Source Copy) and take the timing for FIVE minutes. Turn your best timed writing in for a daily grade. Don't worry if you don't get a "Good" grade today...you can always redo it during the week. We will take a timed writing once or twice a week only. To get to Net Words a Minute (from the Grading Scale on the Students network), remember you can have no more than three errors (3). Subtract your errors (NO MORE THAN THREE) from your GWAM (gross words a minute). That will give you the NWAM to check your grade on the grading rubric. Thursday, June 29 Complete Chapter 6 assignments and turn in your assignment sheet so that I will know to grade your work. As you complete the assignments, begin reading chapter 7. Study for the exam and vocabulary quiz tomorrow. If you have gotten behind, please work out your schedule to come into class early (I am here by 6:45) or stay late (I will allow you to stay until 1:30). It is important to complete all your assignments on time so that you will be prepared for the exams. Friday, June 30 SENIOR CLASS MEETING at 8:30 in the Cafeteria!! Exam and vocabulary quiz over chapter 6 after break. The exam will include a "case" that you will have to type or edit as the previous chapters have had. We will begin discussing Chapter 7, Advanced Word Processor Features. First, we will review creating a table using tabs and tab stops and then compare that with a table with borders. We will learn about Outlines and Tables of Contents as well. As we discuss the chapter, we will complete the practices along the way. Exercises assigned for chapter 7 are: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Wednesday, July 5 Exam and vocabulary quiz over chapter 7 today after break. Complete all your chapter 7 exercises today. For students who have completed all assignments, we will begin the "Autobiographical Brochure." This brochure is due on Friday, July 7, 2006. Last day to make up any work from chapter 7 is tomorrow! New Desktop Publishing assignment on Emerging Technologies due by July 11. SEMESTER EXAM will be on TUESDAY, JULY 11!!! Thursday, July 6 Get any makeup work completed as soon as possible. Continue working on your Autobiographical Brochure; this is due tomorrow. Read Chapter 8 on ExCel and begin ALL practices and exercises: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15. Friday, July 7 Autobiographical Brochure is due today. This is the LAST DAY for makeup from Chapters 5, 6 and 7. Complete all practices and Exercises for Chapter 8: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15. STUDY for your SEMESTER EXAMS (on July 11)!! Monday, July 10 We have a lot of assignments before the end of the semester tomorrow. Complete chapter 8 exercises as follows: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15. Study for your semester exam. Chapter 8 will be tested on the Semester Exam as well. Remember that NO time will be allowed to do makeup work on Tuesday (the last day of classes for the semester). Tuesday, July 11 SEMESTER EXAMS!!! There will be early release today; make sure your parents are aware! Eof the semester. Semester exam from 7:30-9:30. Early release...no break. Wednesday, July 12 FIRST DAY OF NEW TERM. Begin chapter 9 exercises from the CORRECTED chapter 8 exercises in your chapter 8 folder. At this point, if the file is NOT in your folder I will consider that you did not do it. Therefore, when you save BE CAREFUL to save in the correct place; DO NOT SAVE in the DATA FILES folder. Chapter 9 practices and exercises: 1-10 and 12 are due by FRIDAY. Upon completion of the chapter 9 exercises, begin the Excel Calendar given to you on the handout this morning. Begin studying the Review Questions for chapter 9 at the bottom of the web site as well as the vocabulary for chapter 9. The chapter 9 vocabulary quiz and exam will be held on Monday after break. Thursday, July 13 Continue working on Chapter 9 Exercises 1-10 and 12 (a total of 11 exercises). THINK carefully about the IF-THEN formulas so that ONE formula will work under ALL circumstances. Study for quiz and exam on Monday. Friday, July 14 Complete chapter 9 practices and exercises today. Exam and quiz on Monday after break. Turn in calendar by the end of class today: print with your name right aligned in the header. Study for vocab quiz and exam on Monday after break. Monday, July 17 Vocabulary quiz on chapter 9 and Exam over chapter 9 after break today. Begin reading chapter 10 and answering the REVIEW QUESTIONS in COMPLETE sentences (in WORD). These will be taken as a DAILY grade after each chapter. The answers to the Review Questions are NO LONGER given to you on the web site. Review Questions for chapter 10 are due on Tuesday BEFORE break. Begin working the Chapter 10 practices 1-7 and Exercises 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 when you complete the Review Questions. Tuesday, July 18 Exam over chapter 10 tomorrow. Practices and exercises for chapter 10 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10) are due by the end of class today. Begin working on your chapter 11 assignments as per your assignment sheet given on Monday. Wednesday, July 19 Exam and vocabulary quiz for chapter 10 today BEFORE BREAK. After the exam, complete chapter 11 in class: Advanced Spreadsheet Techniques. Answer review questions (for chapter 11) in class in WORD; save and print. The printed copy will be turned in for a daily grade. Exam and vocabulary quiz over chapter 11 will be Friday. Answer review questions for chapter 12 in class; study vocabulary for quiz and chapter 12 exam on TUESDAY. Thursday, July 20 Exam and vocabulary quiz over chapter 11 will be Friday (tomorrow). Answer review questions for chapter 12 in class; study vocabulary for quiz and chapter 12 exam on TUESDAY. Begin chapter 12: all practices and exercises 3, 5, 6 and 7 only will be completed for a grade. Vocabulary quiz and exam for chapter 12 will be on Tuesday (next week). You WILL have to complete the answers to review questions for chapter 12, BUT NOT ANY MORE CHAPTERS AFTER THIS. Friday, July 21 Exam over chapter 11 and vocabulary quiz over chapter 11 today at the beginning of class. Complete ALL practices for chapter 12 and exercises 3, 5, 6 and 7 before the end of class today. If you are behind, please plan to stay a little while everyday until you catch up. Exam and vocabulary quiz for chapter 12 will be on Tuesday next week. Monday, July 24 Complete chapter 12 if not already finished. Exam and vocabulary quiz tomorrow. Begin chapter 13 in Access creating tables in a database. You will complete ALL practices and exercises 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 for the chapter. As you create a database, INCLUDE YOUR LAST NAME (and first initial if there is another person in the classroom with your last name) IN THE NAME OF THE DATABASE. You will also include your name in the saved name of each table, filter, query, etc. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!! Chapter 13 exam and vocabulary quiz will be on Thursday, July 27. Tuesday, July 25 Chapter 12 exam and vocabulary quiz today at the beginning of class. Complete chapter 13 practices and exercises by tomorrow in class.
