Information on summer internships and acadamic opportunities will be listed as soon as they are received.  Most schools or organizations begin sending information on their summer offerings around the beginning of the year.  Examples of last year's summer courses are available in the Counseling Office.

Alfred University, Alfred, NY offers summer programs for high school students.  Programs include Astronomy, How to Get Into a Top ARt School, Creative Writing, Theater, Swimming and Equestrian-English.  Alfred Univ. is located in Western New York State and students live in modern residence halls and meals are served in the University dining hall.  For further information, contact them at 607-871-2612 or www.alfred.edu/summer.

Barnard College, New York City has a Pre-College Advantage program for high school juniors and seniors.  They offer 4-week and 1-week liberal arts programs as well as a Young Women's Leadership Institute.  Enrollment is limited, so get more information now at www.barnard.edu/pcp/nyc09.

Bradley University, Peoria, IL offers two exciting learning experiences during the week of June 21, 2009.  The programs are Leadership Enrichment Camp or Nursing.  Experience and learn new concepts and technologies which will be taught by experts in their fields.  At the same time, have fun while gaining insight into colelge life.  You will stay in one of the Bradley's Residence Halls.  Applications are accepted on a first come basis and the deadline for applications is May 15, 2009.

California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA offers participants a chance to immerse themselves in a college-level curriculum and become part of a creative community, meeting and working with other talented, serious students from diverse backgrounds.  Program dates are June 29 - July 24.  Priority deadline for application is March 20.  Go to their webside at www.cca.edu/precollege for course information, costs, etc.

Carnegie Mellon Unviersity, Pittsburgh, PA Summer of Exploration takes place June 27 to August 7, 2009.  A wide range of programs are offered - architecture, art, design, drama, music, national high school game academy.  For more information go to www.cmu.edu/enrollment/pre-college or call 412-268-2082.

Center for the Gifted at National-Louis University has a large offering of summer programs and workshops including math, writing, computer gams lab, filmmaking, environmental forum and much more.  These are 3-week programs from July 20 through August 7 and are for students entering grades 6-11.  Bus service is available.  Course listings and applications are available in the Counseling Office.  For more information, contact them at www.centerforgifted.org or 847-901-0173.

Denison University, Granville OH will hold a Young Writers Workshop from June 14-21.  The workshop is designed to give you an opportunity to develop your talents and visions as a beginning poet or writer.  The 8-day Workshop encourages high school students to explore, discover, and affirm the craft of writing while in residence on the campus of Denison University.

George Washington Unviersity, Washington DC Summer Scholars Pre-College Programs include a 10-day mini-courses program for 10th, 11th and 12th graders.  Session one offers biomedical engineering, election politics, law and evidence and photojournalism from July 5-15.  Session two offers American foreign policy, environmental studies, interior design, museum studies and political theory from July 19-July 29.  There is also a 6-233k pre-college program for rising seniors from July 2-August 14.  Information and registration materials are available at ww.summerscholars.gwu.edu.

Georgetown University, Washington, DCoffers engaging courses and unique programs to help high school students advance their preparation for success in college.  Opportunities include earning up to 12 college credits from Georgetown, getting an edge in English and math, learn vital research and study skills, prepare for the SATs, international relations, political process, homeland security, entrepreneurship by exploring business concepts and dynamics.  Information, course descriptions and registration is available at http://summer.georgetown.edu/2009.

Illinois Governmental Internship Program is an internship opportunity for high school seniors to gain first hand professional work and learning experiences in the fields of politics, law, media, medicine, social services or transportation in a semester long internship with a governmental agency in Springfield.  Interns work regular office hours Monday through Thursday and on Fridays participate in seminars.  They live with host families in Springfield who provide housing and two meals a day.  Students warn one semester of high school credits for their successful participation.  For detailed information, call Neil Calderon at the Illinois State Board of Education at 217-525-3395 or email ncalderon@springfield.k12.il.us.  The postmarked deadline is April 18, 2009.

Illinois Institute of Technology offers "Experiment in Architecture" a two-week summer workshop from July 20 through July 31.  This is non-residential program designed to introduce high school students to the profession of architecture.  Students will tour Chicago, complete a series of projects, attend lectures by IIT faculty, participate in discussions with local architects and work in the college's model shop and multi-media lab, and field trips.  The program concludes with an exhibition of student work and a receiption for students and their families.  The cost of the program is $850 and the application deadline is June 1, 2009.  For questions about the program or the application, call 312-567-5203 or email Gerald Doyle at dolye@iit.edu.

Illinois State University's College of Business has a summer program called Redbird High School Risk Management.  This program is open to twenty (20) current junior students who have a GPA of at least 3.2 and an ACT score of 24 or higher.  It is a week-long program in the ISU Campus from July 26-31, 2009.  In the Redbird Risk Management Challenge, teammates assume the roles of senior risk management professionals and are asked to guide a corporation through a minefield of potential disasters.  The winning team is determined by which corporation generates the most profit by the end of the week.  You have to be creative and resourceful if you expect to win.  For more information and an application, visit www.katieschool.org or call 309-438-3021.  A brochure is available in the Counseling Office.

Illinois Teen Institute Summer Leadership Conference is a five day youth conference designed for students who have demonstrated leadership potential in their schools and communities.  Participants should be high school students who are proud to be alcohol, tobacco and drug free, are motivated to give service, have the desire to develop their leadership skills, have good listening skills, will reach out to others and value diversity, and want to have fun and have a lifetime experience.  The program takes place July 19 through July 23 at Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL.  The cost is $295.00, which includes tuition, meals, lodging, workshop materials, entertainment and activities.  The application deadline is June 22.  If you have questions call 217-528-7335, ext 52, email at iadda@iadda.org, or check online at www.os-iti.org.  An application form is available in the Counseling Office.


Indiana University, Bloomington, IN offers more than 1,000 classes between two main summer sessions, in addition to numerous specially scheduled summer programs, workshops and seminars.  Take a look at the IUB 2009 Summer Sessions preliminary listing at www.summer.indiana.edu to see what has been planned. 

Indiana University's Kelley School of Business Young Women's Institute will be held during two sessions, July 12-17 and July 19-24.  If you are a current female high school junior, you are invited to apply.  If selected, you'll join a unique group of 25 other women from around the country to spend a week at Indiana University.  You'll participate in workshops with faculty members, interact with successful Kelley alumni and meet with current students.  Enjoy the cultural resources of IU while living in the residence halls.  For more information, visit www.kelley.iu.edu/ugrad/ywi.

Kenyon College, Gambier, OH has two sessions of a 2-week Young Writers Workshop.  Session one is June 28-July 11; session two is July 19-August 1, 2009.  The cost of the program is $2,275 which includes tuition, room, board and books.  This program is a creative writing adventure for high school students. 

Lake Forest College's Writing & Thinking Workshop will be held June 14-27, 2009 at their Lake Forest, IL campus.  This 2-week summer workshop is for high school students who will spend much of their time in small group informal workshops mentored by an experienced writer/teacher who will model strategies for exploring your own ideas.  Students will live on the Lake Forest College campus.  Some of the workshops include train trips to Chicago where you will explore and write at such places as the Art Institute, Chicago Cultural Center and Milennium Park.  The cost of $1,600 includes tuition, housing, meals and activity fees.  Space is limited so apply early by visiting their website www.lakeforest.edu/wtw.

Loyola University, Chicago has a Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars program at their Chicago campus.  There are 3-week programs in which students take a specialized college-level course, 6-week programs in which students welect two college-level courses that cover a similar topic.  Also offered is a Study in Rome program that studies documentary photography in Rome from June 29-July 17, 2009.  Program information and application forms can be found at LUC.edu/summerschoalrs09.

Miami University, Oxford, OH Multicultural Leadership Program runs from June 28 till July 2.  This program is designed for students who come from underrepresentated backgrounds or have demonstrated a commitment towards making their school and/or community more accepting of cultural and ethnic diversity.  During this four-day program, students willengage in academic, leadership and career choice activities.  Additional information and application materials can be found on their website at www.muohio.edu/mlspli. 

Michigan Technological Unviersity in Houghton, MI offers several week-long programs of learning and adventure for high school students.  Students can study engineering, science and technology, computers, outdoor and environmental studies, business, and arts and human sciences.  Information and application materials are available at www.youthprograms.mtu.edu.

Northwestern University College Prep Program offers more than 300 courses on their Evanston, IL campus.  The program is designed for students who want to challenge themselves academically and experience college life before they actually finish high school.  This year's program will take place from June 22 to July 10.  Check out their list of courses and application forms at www.northwestern.edu/collegeprep.com.  The application deadline is May 1, 2009.

Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles offers a college preparation program in art and design: animation, architecture/landscape/interiors, photography, fashion design, graphics, illustration, drawing, painting and toy design.  Check this out at www.otis.edu/soa.

Pace University, New York, NY Summer Scholars Institute runs from July 19 to August 1.  They offer a program of study, including 10 sample majors to choose from, including Youth Politics, Film and Screen Studies, Teater and Acting, Art Studies, Biology, Business Administration and Computer Information Systems.  Each of the majors provides students with an in-depth and interactive clasroom experience, taught by Pace University faculty.  The application deadline is June 12 and more information and applications are available at www.pace.edu/summerscholars.

Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire offers a five week program of academic study, athletics and exploration.  More than 100 courses of study are offered for high school students entering grades 10 and beyond.  A brochure is available in the Counseling Office and more information can be found at www.exeter.edu/summer.

Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY holds a Summer Precollege Program with programs in art, design, architecture, creative writing and more. 
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY offers a 2-week residential summer experience for high school sophomores and juniors who have a strong intereste in engineering and technological professions.  In addition, Rensselaer offers non-credit enrichment courses, credit courses and academic short courses in architecture, computer game development, and product innovation, plus more.  For more information, visit their website or call Mike Gunther, Program Manager for Recruitment at 518-276-8351.

Saint Louis University Summer Workshop Series, a premier medical science career exploration program, participants are chosen on the basis of academic promise, leadership potential and demonstrated interest in the fields of medicine and science.  Tuition per session with on-campus room and board is $1,350.  Visit their website at www.aims.slu.edu.

Savannah College of Art and Design offers a 5-week residential pre-college program for rising high school seniors from June 20 to July 25.  Students reside in college residence halls and have their meals in the SCAD dining halls.  Foundation studies courses are offered and include studio work augmented by slide lectures, demonstrations, field trips and critiques.   Students expand their critical thinking abilities and deepen their understanding of visual language, which can be applied to concepts and materials encountered in major programs and in the professional world.  Tuition, including housing and meals, is $7,576.  Visit their website for more information, www.scad.edu/summer.

School of Cinema & Performing Arts in Los Angeles, New York City and Vermont offers summer camps in filmmaking, acting, dance, photography and more.  Tuition is either $2,000 for 2-week courses or $3,000 for 3-week courses plus approximately $600 per week for room and board on college campuses.  Visit their website for more information, www.socapa.org.

Summer Institute for the Gifted has residential summer programs in California, Texas, Georgia and Pennsylvania.  SIG provides academically advanced students with an interesting and challenging educational experience.  The program combiens remarkable academic courses with cultural, social and recreational opportunities.  They have small classes, low teacher-student ratio, and teaching assistants.  Each student is scheduled for five academic periods selected from nearly 80 academic, arts and recreational courses.  The cost is approximately $2,200 depending on the location.  For information, contact them at www.giftedstudy.com or 866-303-4744.

University of Dayton's Women in Engineering summer camp applications are being taken now.  The camp is held July 12 through 17, 2009 and gives students a chance to dabble in engineering through hands-on, learn-by-doing experiences you can't get in high school.  You'll conduct experiments, innovate, make cool stuff, take things apart and then put them back together again. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Summer Art & Design opportunities include Bachelor of Fine Arts prep, portfolio prep, summer portfolio day and Detroid day camp.  For information on what is offered, go to www.art-design.umich.edu.

University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE offers their Big Red Summer Academic Camps with courses in our changing earth, child development, companion animals, culinary arts, filmmaking, food molecular biology, golf, quilt design, spider science, theatre and more.  Space is limited so apply early. University of Wisconsin, Platteville Pioneer Summer Music Camp will be held June 21-27.  Instruction includes ensemble and sectional rehearsals, mastr classes, music theory classes, jazz ensemble and private instruction.  The tuition, including housing, is $370.  Register online at www.uwplatt.edu/music.

University of Wisconsin, Whitewater Forensics Clinic is open to students who are interested in public speaking, speech writing, and oral interpretation.  The cost of this clinic is $400 and includes meals, housing, accident insurance and instructional costs.  Information and registration is available at http:///camps.uww.edu.

Washington University, St. Louis, MOSummer Scholars program offers two sessions: Session A, June 7-11 and Session B, July 12-August 14.  They offer real college courses with credit that can apply to a future Washington Unviersity degree or may be transferred to another college or university.  You may choose classes from the following areas: foreign languages, science, humanities, arts and social sciences.  You must be a current high school sophomore or junior with an academic average of B+ or better and an ACT score of at least 25.  The cost of the program is $5,934.  Scholarship assistance is available to students who demonstrate financial need.  For information and application materials, go to www.summerscholars.wustl.edu.
