JONATHAN SAVES DAVID
Everyone in Israel was talking about David, the brave soldier.
When King Saul heard what the people were saying, he became so jealous of David that he decided to kill him.
David and Jonathan (King Saul's son) had grown up together and cared for each other like brothers.
“I will tell Jonathan that Saul wants to kill me,” thought David,” and perhaps he can help me.”
But Jonathan could not believe that his father planned to do such a wicked thing.
“I must find out for myself if it is true!” he told David, “Go into the fields and stay for three days. Then come back and hide in the pile of rocks outside the city. I will pretend I am going hunting near the rocks with my quiver of arrows. I will bring a small boy with me and I will shoot three arrows to the side. If I have found out that my father does not want to kill you, I will say: ‘The arrows are in front of you,’ but if you hear me say; ‘The arrows are beyond you, ‘then you must flee for your life!”
David went into the fields, and at the end of three days, he came back and hid among the rocks. Soon he heard footsteps, a boy’s and a man’s. Then came the faint twang of a bowstring as three arrows were shot into the air. David’s heart beat fast as he waited for Jonathan to speak.
Eventually he heard his friend say, “The arrows have gone beyond you, boy!”
When David heard these words, his heart was filled with sorrow, for now he knew without any doubt that Saul wanted to kill him.
As David left his hiding place, he heard Jonathan whisper, “May God go with you, David. And remember, I am your friend forever!”
