It says that we believe in God and we agree to do all of His mitzvot. 'Shema' means 'hear' or to listen. The most important parts of the Shema are: Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuto Le’olam Va’ed Listen Jewish people! Hashem is our God. There is only one God. Jewish children say the Shema at night before they go to sleep. HOW DO WE SAY THE SHEMA? Just before we say the Shema we take a quiet moment to get ready. During this time we concentrate on God and the meaning of the Shema. We cover our eyes with our right hand, blocking out anything that may take our thoughts away from the prayer. Then the Shema is said in a quiet, clear voice. Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Elohaynu Adonai Echad. Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. Barukh Shem k'vod malkhuto l'olam va-ed Blessed be the Name of His glorious kingdom forever and ever V-ahavta et Adonai Elohecha b-chol l'vavcha u-v- chol naf'sh'cha u-v-chol m'odecha. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. YISRAEL One of the names we Jews call ourselves is YISRAEL - ISRAEL. No matter where Jewish people live in the world we all call ourselves Yisrael. You too are called Yisrael. In the land of Israel there are Jewish people who have come from many different countries. They may have come from Australia, Ethiopia, Yemen, South Africa or various other countries. Some Israelis and their families have lived in Israel for many hundreds, or even thousands of years. Jewish people are all members of Klal Yisrael - the Jewish community. Jewish people have the responsibility to care for each other. This is called 'Ahavat Yisrael' - love for all Jewish people.
