Course Overview Advanced Placement Government is a course designed to give students an analytical and philosophical perspective on politics and government in the United States. Students develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts of democratic theory and philosophy, examine the structure and institutions of the national government, analyze the Constitution and amendments, and investigate political beliefs and behaviors, party politics and interest groups. Civil rights and civil liberties and the interplay of freedom and equality are also primary areas of content and class discussion. The summary objective of the course is to produce an enlightened citizenry patterned after the Jeffersonian ideal. This objective is pursued through consistent emphasis on the knowledge and attitudes necessary for the American democratic experiment to continue and remain vibrant in the 21st century and beyond.
