Hello students and parents !

We are continuing to study the Civil War! Here are the details:

VS.7 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the issues that divided our nation and led to the Civil War by
a) Identifying the events and differences between northern and southern states that divided Virginians and led to secession, war, and the creation of West Virginia;
b) describing Virginia's role in the war, including identifying major battles that took place in Virginia.
Study your foldables and your notes inside your Interactive Notebook for Social Studies.
Race to the Governor's House Memory Game is on-going. Encourage your student to review VA History through this great SOL practice tool.

Encourage your student to study their VA History notebook each night for a few minutes to prepare them for future assessments. All history assignments should be recorded inside student homework agenda by your student.

Your child is taking part in a SOL Virginia History game called, Race to the Governor's House. There are nine races involved in this review game. Each race has its own set of memory flash cards with VA History facts on them for your student to work on at home and at school. When your student is ready to test his skills, he will test in his homeroom on a YES student computer. Scores of 85% or higher will allow your student to progress to the next race level. Lower scores will require review and retesting. Each race can be taken three times if necessary. Please encourage your child to do his best and complete all nine races. The game, Race to the Governor's House, has proven to be an excellent tool for students to keep their VA History skills alive and prepare them for the VA History SOL in early June.

Please check your child's homework agenda each day. This will help you know what your child is working on and future test dates and events as well. Please remind your child to bring their VA History Interactive Notebook home often for review help. Notebooks are a graded assignment.

REMINDERS:
Students will take their Spelling Test and Reading Selection Test on Friday.
The Reading Selection Tests are always open book. Students are encouraged to reread the weekly SF story at home Thursday evening. This can count on their Home Reading Logs.
Please encourage your child to read nightly for at least 20 minutes, Mon-Thurs nights.
Home reading needs to be recorded on the blue Home Reading Log and signed by parents Mon-Thurs nights. This is a graded assignment.
