YEAR 6 AND YEAR 5/6 COURSE OVERVIEW – TERM 4, 2002

Dear Parents,

The following overview offers an insight into the teaching and learning program designed for Year 6 Kosi Climbers and 5/6 Sherpas. This will enable you to support your child's education and to form a basis for discussion at home. Both classes will work closely together to maintain consistency and continuity.

ENGLISH
Much of the Year 6 work will be closely linked to the World Trip unit ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’, where the students will look at "How are the world's continents culturally different?" from  our major SOSE unit for the term, and ‘Youth Trek’. Year 5MR will be studying Light and Vision ,examining "How has knowledge about light and vision been used to create animations and movies?".
Speaking and Listening
Children will participate in a variety of activities to further develop their speaking and listening skills. through:
 Group presentations to the class.
 Class meetings and discussions of issues relevant to Year 6 and 5/6.
 Activities with Year 1 and Year 3/2 Buddies
 Discussions of class novels, the World Trip Unit and current affairs issues
Reading and Viewing
Students will continue to work from the class text ‘Reading Between the Lines’. The Literature Study, as set up in term 3, will continue. The children will have the choice of which novels they would like to read.
Students will also focus on identifying information needs through the research process. They will  systematically find and record information from a variety of sources for the World Trip unit and the Year 5 study on Light and Vision.
Writing
Students will continue to use writing to develop familiar ideas, events and information, and adjust their writing to take into account content, purpose and audience.   The focus for this term will be on the World Trip unit, writing Youth Trek journals and Memoirs, recording and presenting information for Light and Vision.
They will draw on planning and reviewing strategies that assist in effectively completing particular tasks, including proofreading their own writing and selecting the appropriate genre for each writing purpose.

STUDIES OF SOCIETY AND ITS ENVIRONMENT / SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
The SOSE unit for Year 6 for the term ‘Planes, Trains, Automobiles…and Ships’ has a world geography focus.  The students will use the Internet to travel the world, and will have to make choices about their learning, research and presentation while operating within the established frameworks.  The aims of the unit are to extend research skills, improve Internet skills, and develop an understanding of and appreciation for other countries and cultures.
During the term the Year 6 students will participate in Youth Trek.  This program challenges the students to trek across the ACT from east to west, with various tasks en route to develop skills taught in the classroom. It covers areas of SOSE and Science, such as mapping and environmental issues.
The Year 5 students will be researching Light and Vision and studying its connection with  animation and movie making.

INFORMATION LITERACY is used to support our SOSE and science units. We will continue to focus on the research process, note taking and presenting information.   Mrs Nott will continue to work with students on a negotiated topic based on My Special Person.

PE/HEALTH
This term all Year 5 and 6 students will participate in Jump Rope For Heart where they will develop their coordination, skills fitness and awareness of heart disease.
They will participate in Softball Clinics for 4 weeks developing their skills in this sport.

THE ARTS
The students will participate in a variety of activities integrated into the themes and topics being studied.   They will design title pages, create postcards and posters, and explore ways in which their information for the World Trip and Light and Vision units can be creatively presented.  They will also participate in 'TV or Not TV', a performance scheduled for week 3, and related activities, and be involved with the writing of the Farewell Song for the Year 6 graduation.

FRENCH
The students will be focusing on diary and letter writing, enabling them to name and describe their favourite sport or activity in French. They will write simple sentences in French, use a French dictionary and use formats that teacher provides for diary entries.
They will also be examining some Christmas customs in France. They will complete activity sheets, participate in games, and use a French dictionary.  They will compile a diary of activities for a week and make Christmas decorations and cards

HOMEWORK:   Homework for this term will largely consist of completing class work as we have a very hectic term with a lot of enhancement activities. The writing of Memoirs will mostly be done at home with some first draft work to be done at school.
The children who have access to the Internet at home will be able to check homework requirements and important information and dates on our Class Websites.   These websites will also contain links to work being undertaken in the classroom, and to homework help sites. The addresses for these websites are:
http://www.quia.com/pages/stefopoulos.html, and/or
http://www.quia.com/pages/vegemites.html

We are trialing a homework diary which will help the students stay organized and prepare them further for high school.   They can be used for home/school communication as well as homework reminders.

We continue to value the support of Catherine Moore, Sue Nott, Bruce Beaumont, Katrina Sinclaire, and Rebecca Hughes who all have an important role in the smooth running of Year 6HS and Year 5/6 MR.

The students are assessed by testing, anecdotal record keeping and observing their performance in the classroom.

If you have any concerns please make an appointment to see us to discuss them.

Yours sincerely
