Mrs. Gray's First Grade "Starrific" News
February 13 - 17, 2012

THEME:   This week we will talk about presidents.  We will focus on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  We will discuss some characteristics of a good president.

READING:  Please continue to work on vocabulary words for Themes 5 and 6.  You can cut the word cards apart and use them as flash cards.    When your child recognizes the words quickly, he/she may use the words in sentences.  We will be working on the words here at school as well.  Continue to go over themes 3-4 words for quick recall.  We will continue to review beginning and ending sounds and vowel sounds.  We will use vocabulary words to complete sentences.  We will read silently and aloud.  We will work on recalling details about the stories we read.  I will be sending the word list for Themes 7-8 soon.

After your child reads to you, have him/her tell you what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  Ask who are the characters, where does the story take place, or tell me the story in your own words.  These strategies help to develop comprehension skills and helps your child read for meaning.  Reading is the key to success in all academic areas.  Thank you for reading with your child each day.  It is so important in helping your child to become a great reader.

MATH:  We will continue with Topic 12.  We will compare and order numers to 100.  We will:
1.  Write numbers that are 1 more or 1 less and 10 more or 10 less than a given number.
2.  Use a hundred chart to show 1 more than, 1 less than, 10 more than, and 10 less than a given number.
3.  Compare two-digit numbers using models.
4.  Find missing numbers on a hundred chart.
5.  Estimate the positions of numbers on a number line.
6.  Use the words before, after, and between to order numbers.
7.  Order numbers from least to greatest.
8.  Make organized lists to solve problems.
Continue to help your child practice quick recall of math facts to 15.  The use of flash cards are very helpful.

HANDWRITING:  We will practice good handwriting.  We will focus on correct letter formations, spacing, and neatness.  Encourage your child to slow down and take time to do the very best job he/she can.  It is important for your child to pay attention and look at the board.

Language Arts:  We are learning about the types of sentences and about punctuation and capitalization.  We have learned that a sentence has a naming part and a telling part.  We will continue our unit on writing names of special people, places, animals, days, months, and holidays correctly.

SPELLING:  This week we will have our review unit of twenty words.  We will have our practice test on Thursday, February 16th  and and the final test on Friday, February 17th.  The words this week are spelled with lower case letters.  I will take 1 point off for each letter that is capitalized.  Please study the words some each day before the test.  The review unit test paper needs to be signed and returned to me.
