Mrs. Gray's First Grade "Starrific" News
December 14-18, 2009

As stated last week, the holiday season is such a wonderful time of the year.  Children are so excited about the holidays and all the activities associated with them.  Please remember to remind your child to listen, stay on task and do his/her best.  Getting plenty of rest and eating a good breakfast help to keep your child attentive and on task.

We will conclude our unit about holidays and gingerbread.  We will be talking and learning about some holiday traditions that families celebrate.  We are reading and comparing stories about the Gingerbread Boy.  We will also complete some crafts and even taste some delicious treats!!!  WOW!  What fun!

READING:  Thank you so much for the continued support of the reading homework.  The children are bringing their books, homework sheets, and bags to school daily.  WAY TO GO!  This is a great time to ask your child some quick recall questions about the stories he/she is reading.  Practice theme 5-6 words and continue to work on themes 1-4 words until they are mastered.  We will not send home reading books during the break.  We do encourage you to have your child read books from home and continue to work on the vocabulary words from Themes 5-6 during your down time.

MATH:  In math, we are comparing and ordering numbers.  We are comparing two-digit numbers to determine which is less than, equal to, or greater than.  We are counting forward and backward.  Practice counting backward with your child and continue to work on mastering math facts to 12.  We are also counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's.

HANDWRITING: We are still working to make correct letter formations, space correctly, and put the letters on the lines correctly.  Encourage your child to slow down and take time to do neat and correct work.

SPELLING: This week we will have a nine weeks review lesson.  We do not have a bonus word this week.  The practice test will be on WEDNESDAY, December 16th and the final test will be on THURSDAY, December 17th.
