Mrs. Gray's First Grade "Starrific" News
May 21st - May 30th, 2012

WOW!!!  What an awesome Field Day!  Thank you to all of you who helped to make the day so great.  A special thank you to Coach Whaley for his great planning and hard work and to all the volunteers who helped before, during, and after the events.  We couldn't do without you.

THEME:   This week we will continue to learn about the oceans and some of the creatures who live there.

READING:  Please  go over the vocabulary words for Themes 9-10.  I will be testing your child for quick recognition of the words this week.

I hope you will continue to encourage your child to read this summer.  Please have him/her tell you what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  Ask who are the characters, where does the story take place, or tell me the story in your own words.  These strategies help to develop comprehension skills and helps your child read for meaning.  Reading is the key to success in all academic areas.  Thank you for reading with your child each day.  It is so important in helping your child to become a great reader.

MATH:  We will continue Topic 18.  This week we will:

1.  Use a real-object graph to answer questions.
2.  Use a picture graph to answer questions.
3.  Use a bar graph to answer questions.
4.  Describe the location of an object on a grid.
5.  Record data using tally marks.
6.  Collect data and organize it in real-object graphs.
7.  Organize and analyze data using a picture graph.
8.  Make and use graphs to solve problems.
9.  Describe the likelihood of an event as certain or impossible.
10. Describe the likelihood of an event as likely or unlikely.
Our essential questions is:  How can graphs be used to show data and answer questions?

HANDWRITING:  We are trying to practice good handwriting.  We will focus on correct letter formations, spacing, and neatness.  Encourage your child to slow down and take time to do the very best job he/she can.  It is important for your child to pay attention and look at the board.  This is the time of the year when children really want to rush to finish work.

Language Arts:  We are learning about the types of sentences and about punctuation and capitalization.  We have learned that a sentence has a naming part and a telling part.  We will continue to work on proofreading sentences to find and correct capitalization and punctuation errors in sentences.

SPELLING:  NO SPELLING

REMINDERS:

1.  The Weekly Work Folder was sent home on Friday, May 18th.  Also, your child will not be allowed to charge lunch in the cafeteria this week.  Please check the balance if you are not sure if there is money in your child's account.  PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO HAVE YOUR CHILD CHOOSE ONE PIECE OF WORK FOR THE GREAT WORK BOARD!

2.  Remember to send a note if your child will be going home a different way than usual.  Because of more rigid guidelines from the State Department, please send a note or email me or the office when your child is absent from school and the reason he/she is absent.

3.  Support the Box Tops in Education program.  A note was sent home about collecting the box tops during the summer.

4.  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  Tennis shoes are recommended for outdoor play.  Our PE day is Tuesday.  Please send or have your child wear tennis shoes.

5. If you have not joined PTA or made a contribution to the Booster Club, please consider doing so.  Each group works so hard for the benefit of the children.  We could not do without them.

6.  Please remind your child to be a good listener, stay on task, and complete all work.  This is the time of the year when many children  find it very difficult to stay on task and complete work each day.   Thank you so much for your support.
