About this Quia Page
This site will be your source for everything you need to know
about your Spanish II class, except for grades, which you’ll find at the MyCCS
site.
If you lose something, you can download it below; if you’re
absent, you are expected to have checked this site and know what we did in
class before you return from your absence. You’ll find advice to help you to
make the homework easier, links to check out that relate what we’re learning to
the real-world, and downloadable audio from some classes so you can re-listen,
or stay caught up during an absence.
1/5, 6: Converse in Spanish about winter break. Regular Preterites song and review. Practiced direct and indirect
object pronouns and with verb cards in past tense. Went to lab to work on
homework. Homework: For next time,
do “Preterite reg,
More ar/er/ir, present, all infin” in Conjuguemos,
to make sure you’re able to deal with preterite even
if you have present tense mixed in. If you can get 20 right with 90% accuracy
in five minutes, you’ll receive credit, and you can probably consider yourself
pretty well “brushed-up” on the preterite. If you
notice particular weak areas, you’ll want to find activities that focus on
those areas, then come back to this activity.
1/9: (Gold) Talked about homework. Introduction to phrases like “hace tres años que
estudio español”, also
known as the “hace time expression”. Worked on direct and
indirect object pronouns and keeping your terminology straight. Sang
Comparatives, Irregular Preterites, and Regular Preterites songs. Began novel, Tierra. Homework Keep
thinking of your skill level in terms of where you should be right now on the preterite: you should be good at all types of preterites. If you breezed through that last activity
without having to use your materials, you don’t have to worry about doing much
with verbs tonight—instead, get a jump on the vocabulary I passed out.
Otherwise, continue trying to get really good at that assignment (you’re really
good when you can score at a high percentage without materials), and if you
need to do more basic activities to master skills like stem-changers or y preterites
first, do that.
1/12: (Blue) Introduction to phrases like “hace tres años
que estudio español”, also known as the “hace time expression”. Using the “hace time
expression” with the preterite to say “ago”. Worked
on direct and indirect object pronouns and keeping your terminology straight. Tarea: Keep thinking of your skill level in
terms of where you should be right now on the preterite:
you should be good at all types of preterites. If you
breezed through that last activity without having to use your materials, you
don’t have to worry about doing much with verbs tonight—instead, get a jump on
the vocabulary I passed out. Otherwise, continue trying to get really good at
that assignment (you’re really good when you can score at a high percentage
without materials), and if you need to do more basic activities to master
skills like stem-changers or y preterites first, do that.
1/13, 14: Review of hace time expression, learn to make and
answer questions with them. Read through first page (20 agosto)
of Tierra and discuss. Homework: Begin learning vocabulary
from page 187 for quiz three classes from today. You can work on the Quia activity entitled “II 3.2 Vocabulary”, work in
Classzone.com, and/or quiz yourself from the folded sheet. You should be able
to do the Conjuguemos activity entitled “Unit 3.2 (p.
187)” by the day of the quiz without materials with 25 right and 90% accuracy.
As always, I recommend learning the vocabulary flash-card style
English-to-Spanish before beginning the Conjuguemos
activity. You will have much less stress, and will remember the words better (less
reviewing for the test) if you divide up the time you spend on this vocabulary
and spread it out over the days between now and the quiz! Also: Re-read Tierra “20 agosto”
and answer the questions in the Quia activity
entitled: “Tierra Prologo, 20 agosto”.
90% required for credit.
1/15, 16: Sing Comparativos
and Irregular Preterites. Read and discussed second
page of Tierra (22 agosto). Homework: Continue
studying p. 187 vocabulary for quiz class-after-next. Begin work on Conjuguemos activity “Unit 3.2 (p. 187)” if you’re ready.
To keep fresh on what you’ve read, and to have the chance to see the test
questions over Tierra, re-read “22 agosto” and do the Quia activity
below with 90% accuracy.
1/20, 21: Watched video introduction to p. 187 vocabulary. Read and
discussed 23 agosto
from Tierra. Sing Irregular Preterites. Card pass irregular preterites.
Homework: Conjuguemos
“Preterites, Irregular”. All verbs are found in the
song lyrics on the Past-Tense Sheet, and in the lower-right corner. 25 right with
90% accuracy. Continue preparing for Quiz next class, and complete the Conjuguemos
activity “Unit 3.2 (p. 187)”. Get 25 right with 90% accuracy.
1/22, 23: Quiz over 3.2 (p. 187) vocabulary. Read 26 and 27 agosto
and discuss. To lab to work on hace time
expression and irregular preterites. Homework: Carefully read about hace time
expressions in the Grammar Packet (section A), then do “Hace Time Expression” in Conjuguemos. You can download and watch my PowerPoint below
if you think that would help. Throughout the activity, keep in mind that it’s
the word “ago” that will determine whether you use the past or present tense
(see grammar packet, section A). Get 15 right with 85% accuracy. Also, re-read 23 agosto and 26 agosto and
do the Quia activity below entitled “Tierra 23, 26 agosto”.
Get at least five of the six questions right. You may want to take a look at
what’s on the test time-after-next and see if there’s anything else you need to
brush-up on.
1/26, 27: Read 27 agosto,
discuss. Go
to lab to do whatever you need to practice for test. Read
28 agosto, discussed
in groups. Homework: Test next class
(p. 187 vocabulary, regular preterites (from
“regular” song: stem-changing, y, qu/gu/c),
irregular preterites (from song and lower-right of
Past-Tense sheet), Tierra reading
(multiple-choice questions pulled from Quia
assignment), hace time expression.) To prepare for the reading portion, have your reading sheets handy and
work on the “Tierra Test 1” assignment on Quia. Get 85%
correct for credit, but if you accomplish this the first or second time, keep
in mind that you’re not seeing about two-thirds of the questions, and that the
questions you don’t see may be on the test. All questions about the book on the
test will come from this pool of questions, but not all of these questions will
be on the test. It will probably take about three times through it to make sure
you see all of the questions. Refer to the pages
as you go, for both content and for vocabulary!
1/28, 29: Test: p.
187 vocabulary, regular preterites (from “regular”
song: stem-changing, y, qu/gu/c),
irregular preterites (from song and lower-right of
Past-Tense sheet), Tierra reading
(multiple-choice questions pulled from Quia
assignments), hace time expression. Homework: Begin preparing for vocabulary quiz three classes from
now over vocabulary on p.217. There are close to 40 words, so start right away!
1/30, 2/2: Watched
Telehistoria DVD from Unidad
3, Lecciónes 1 & 2. Went to lab to learn
Imperfect Tense on Conjuguemos
activity “Imperfect Tense”. (Everything you need to know about it is on the
back side of the Past Tense Sheet.) Passed cards to review direct object
pronouns and indirect object pronouns. Homework:
Continue to prepare for the vocabulary quiz (p.217) class-after-next. If
you’re familiar with the vocabulary, you may be ready to work on the Conjuguemos
assignment (due time-after-next) entitled “: Unit 4-1 (p. 217)”. Remember, work
on these words a little each day! Also, to make sure you’re keeping up with the
new verb forms, get 30 right with 95% accuracy on the Conjuguemos activity entitled
“Imperfect Tense”.
2/3, 4: Watch
DVD vocabulary intro over 4.1 vocabulary. Read 31 agosto from Tierra. Card passing, imperfect. Read through a story in English
and discussed preterite vs. imperfect usage. Homework: Prepare for quiz next time
over 4.1 vocabulary. Get 20 right with 95% accuracy without using your
materials on Conjuguemos
vocabulary practice activity “Unit 4-1 (p. 217)” to make sure you’re prepared
for the quiz.
2/5, 6: Quiz over 4.1 vocabulary (p. 217). Read
1 septiembre.
Story in English w/preterite/imperfect discussion.
Comparatives song. Homework: Re-read
31agosto and 1 septiembre and get 80% the Quia activity over them.
2/9, 10:
Read 3 septiembre.
Preterite/Imperfect story in English. Comparatives
song. Homework: Re-read 3 septiembre and
get an 80% or higher on the Quia assignment over it.
Also, prepare (I recommend doing the Conjuguemos activity over imperfect until you’re really good)
for a quiz over imperfect forms. The quiz will be taken in the lab on Quia, so no partial credit will be given—you’ll need to get
your accent marks right!
2/11, 12: Quiz
over imperfect forms. Read 5 septiembre. Review of reflexive verbs with cards. Homework: Prepare for test over p. 217
vocabulary, imperfect forms, preterite forms (review,
regular and irregular), questions over readings since 31 agosto, including recognition (you
give me the English) of vocabulary
found in glossaries: burlarse de, reírse de, cortar, (el) césped, cambiar, lo que, ayer, la pandilla, mientras, además, árboles, tratar de, espía, oye, indocumentado.
There will be preterite and imperfect forms on the test, but NO preterite vs. imperfect! Do “Tierra Test 2” (below) three
or four times, and you’ll see all of the potential Tierra test questions. There
is an activity “II Sem 2
Practice for test 2” below that includes all topics on the test. It’s a little
intimidating because you can’t tell where the imperfect verb section ends and
where preterite begins, but imperfect ends when the
parentheses after the verbs disappear.
2/13, 17: Test: p.
217 vocabulary, imperfect forms, preterite forms
(review), questions over readings from 31
agosto through 5 septiembre, including recognition
of vocabulary found in glossaries: burlarse de, reírse de, cortar, (el) césped, cambiar, lo que, ayer, la pandilla,
mientras, además, árboles, tratar de, espía, oye, indocumentado.
Homework: begin learning 4.2
vocabulary on page 241 for a quiz three classes from now. Also, begin deciding
on a Three Ps “Escoge
tú” project—notice that there is a reward for
turning it in early!
2/18, 19: Continued
analyzing preterite vs. imperfect story in English.
Review d.o. and i.o pronouns. Explanation and demonstration of using direct
object and indirect object pronouns in the same sentence. Songs. Homework: Continue preparing for the
quiz class-after-next. Work on preterite and
imperfect forms as-needed to become excellent at them.
2/20, 24: Go
over tests. Read 6 septiembre,
discuss. Review concept of double object pronouns. Preterite/Imperfect practice in Spanish
with a fill-in-the blank review of Tierra.
Homework: Continue studying for
vocabulary quiz next time. Do the Conjuguemos
assignment “Unit 4.2 Vocabulary p. 241”. Get at least 25 right with 90%
accuracy.
2/24, 25: Quiz,
p. 241 vocabulary. Preterite/Imperfect practice. Read
8 septiembre.
Conversation in Spanish about the weekend. Homework:
By now, you should be able to do the Conjuguemos activity “Preterites, All, with present” successfully. Be careful,
there are a few present-tense verbs
that may pop up, and you’ll see some direct object pronouns as well. If you
have trouble with this activity, figure out which types of verbs are causing
you trouble, consult the information in the songs, and work on the activity
that focuses on your area of weakness. You need to get to a high level of
success on Preterite, All, with present” and stay
there for as long as you take Spanish.
2/26, 27: Worked
in lab on the Conjuguemos activity “II Common Errors
to Eliminate” and the Quia activity “II Writing
Problems (below). Read 10 septiembre and discussed. Preterite
and Imperfect on Tierra review. Homework: Continue your quest for
excellence on preterite forms. Also, do “Preterite and Imperfect” on Conjuguemos, Remember that you’ll
use preterite forms for actions or states that are
“events”—that is to say that when the beginning,
end, or entirety of the action is represented by the one word; and you’ll
use imperfect for ongoing or repeated actions or states. See your
“Past Tense Sheet” for the full explanation. If you are
weak on preterite and/or imperfect forms, this
assignment will be harder than it needed to be. If forms are causing you more trouble than the preterite/imperfect decision, you need to go back to the
types of verbs that give you the most trouble and practice them individually,
then come back to the assignment when you’re good at the forms. Get 15 right
with 85% accuracy.
3/2, 3:
To lab to work on Quia activity (below) “II Writing
Problems”. Preterite/Imperfect Tierra review worksheet. Worked on direct object pronoun worksheet
in the formats that will be used on the test. Homework: Prepare for Tierra portion
of test by re-reading the last three chapters, and doing the Quia activity “Tierra 6, 8, 10 septiembre”. Get 80% for credit.
3/4, 5: To
lab to work on “II Writing Problems, D.O. pronouns. Read and discuss 18 octubre.
Work on Preterite/Imperfect worksheet”. Homework:
So that you can devote your time to whatever weaknesses you want to address
(Tierra, preterite
or imperfect forms) I am assigning no new homework. Keep in-mind that you’ve
got an essay to write class-after-next, so you could look over the Writing
Reference Sheet and work on “II Writing Problems” on Quia.
You’ve also got a test (see below) that day, so you could review anything you
need to for that. And you may have work you’d like to do on the 3P’s project,
due by the day of the test.
3/6, 9: To
lab to work on “direct object pronoun misc. formats” in Conjuguemos. Continue working on Preterite/Imperfect worksheet. Homework: prepare for test next time over p. 241 vocabulary, preterite vs. imperfect (including any and all types of
regular and irregular preterites), review sections on
forms only of preterite and imperfect, all Tierra reading since the last test, and
direct object pronouns in any format used in the Conjuguemos assignment “Direct
Objects, misc. formats” (section instructions on the test are identical to the
three sections on the direct object worksheet. There is a Quia
quiz entitled “Tierra Test 3” that you should do to make sure that you are
ready for that section of the test. The questions on the test will be taken
from the same pool of questions used in the activity. You will need to take it
3-4 times to see all possible questions. Don’t forget that you also have an
essay to write in class tomorrow, so look over the Writing Reference Packet and
brush up on “II Writing Problems”.
3/10, 11: Test over p. 241 vocabulary, preterite vs.
imperfect (including any and all types of regular and irregular preterites), review sections on forms only of preterite and imperfect, all Tierra reading since the last test, and direct object pronouns in any
format used in the Conjuguemos
assignment “Direct Objects, misc. formats”. Write in-class essay.
3/12, 13:
Read 20 octubre.
Discussed and sang Comparatives. Sang regular and irregular preterite
songs. Conversation. To lab for make-up of essays, 3Ps. Homework: None. Enjoy!
