About this Quia Page

This site will be your source for everything you need to know about your Spanish II class, except for grades, which you’ll find at the MyCCS site.

If you lose something, you can download it below; if you’re absent, you are expected to have checked this site and know what we did in class before you return from your absence. You’ll find advice to help you to make the homework easier, links to check out that relate what we’re learning to the real-world, and downloadable audio from some classes so you can re-listen, or stay caught up during an absence.

3/16, 17: Go over test. Read 5 noviembre. Comparatives, Family Song. Watch 7.2 Vocab intro DVD.  Homework: Prepare for quiz. Do the Conjuguemos assignment “Unit 7.2 Vocabulary p. 409”. Get at least 25 right with 90% accuracy.

3/18, 19: Quiz 7.2 Vocabulary (p. 409) Read Epílogo. Songs: Stress, Family, Comparatives. Practice comparisons with pictures. Double object pronoun review, Double OP DVD practice. 3/20, 23: Spelling words that may or may not have accent marks. Mariachi song. Practiced Preterite vs. Imperfect. Practiced comparatives with pictures. Practiced double object pronouns by passing cards. Songs. Worked on double object pronouns (levels 1 and 2) and Comparatives level 1 in lab. Homework: Look over letter O in the grammar packet. (You can also access the PowerPoint explanation that I used in class over double object pronouns in the download section below.) In Conjuguemos, do “Double Object Pronouns, level 1”. Get 20 right with 90% accuracy for credit.

3/24, 25: Conversation. Songs. Comparatives pictures. Write sentences about a photo using comparatives and superlatives. Preterite/Imperfect worksheet. Pass cards with double object pronouns.  To lab to work on Comparatives/Superlatives Level 2. Homework: In Conjuguemos, do “Double Object Pronouns” level 2. Get 20 right with 90% accuracy.

3/26, 27: Comparatives/Superlatives practice with photos. Double object pronoun DVD, double object pronoun card passing. To lab to work on double object pronouns (level 3), comparatives level 2, preterite and imperfect, and/or writing problems. Worked on Preterite vs. Imperfect worksheet. Homework: Prepare for test over 7.2 vocabulary, double object pronouns (through level 3), preterite and imperfect forms and usage, the basics of comparatives and superlatives (level 1), and muy/mucho, bien/bueno, mal/malo from the “II Writing Problems” activity in Quia.

3/30, 3/31: Test 4: 7.2 vocabulary, double object pronouns (through level 3), preterite and imperfect forms and usage, the basics of comparatives and superlatives (level 1), and muy/mucho, bien/bueno, mal/malo from the “writing problems” activity in Quia. Homework: In Conjuguemos, do “II Common Errors to Eliminate”. Shoot for 40 correct with at least 90% accuracy.

4/1, 2: Songs, VROs and Reflexive review. Conversation. Accent mark practice. Comparative sentence practice. Telehistoria. Homework: Review assignment from Conjuguemos: ”When Words”. Get 40 right with 95% accuracy for credit. You learned these words with the 3.2 vocabulary on the p. 187 vocab list, and they are at the bottom of your new vocabulary list This vocabulary will be included on the quiz and test along with your 5.1 Vocabulary.

4/13, 14: Went over test. Conversation about Spring Break, along with morning routine, including a review of telling time. To lab to work on “Personal a, or not” in Conjuguemos. (“Personal a, or not” is not a homework assignment yet, but someday it will be.) Songs: Both preterite songs, Es La Una, Weather, Comparatives, Mariachi. Homework: In a careful reading of sections C and E of the grammar packet, you will learn how to make Present Participles—those “-ing” words that we’ve seen all year with –ando and –iendo endings. Notice that there are regular ones and irregular ones. Also notice that you can add pronouns to them just as you can to infinitives, and that accent marks are added to keep the stress from changing. You have seen these in many readings this year, so this shouldn’t be too strange for you but you will not be able to complete the work without a careful reading of C and E. Get 25 right with 90% accuracy on “Participles, Present” to make sure you’re off to a good start. Also, continue getting good at pronunciation and faster at the flash cards over the 5.1 vocabulary, working your way up to the Conjuguemos activity over it. There is a quiz two classes from now—do a little each day and don’t get behind!

4/15, 16: Es La Una, Weather, Comparatives, Mariachi. Translated some sentences using comparatives and superlatives. Conversation about break and morning routine. To lab to work on “Personal a, or not” and “Backward Verbs Levels 1, 2, 3” in Conjuguemos. Homework: Read letter C in the grammar packet about the present progressive (“is ___-ing”). For credit, do “Progressive Tense, Present”. Get 20 right with at least 90% accuracy for credit. If you have trouble with the participles, stop and do the “Participles, Present” activity until the participles are no longer a problem, then continue with the homework. Continue practicing your vocabulary for the quiz class-after-next. Also, next class, we will begin watching a movie in Spanish, with subtitles in Spanish. Since you will enjoy the movie more if you can recognize some of the unfamiliar vocabulary, I have prepared a set of Quizlet cards for the words that will be in the first segment of the film. You can receive extra credit on the up-coming quiz for learning to recognize these words.

4/17, 20: Comparative practice (PowerPoint downloadable below) sentences. Viewed 5.1 Vocab DVD (available at Classzone.com) and shared first-hand cultural information about Spain. Talked about the civil war in the ‘80s in El Salvador and how it fit into the context of Latin American history and the Cold War. Saw the first 22 minutes of Voces Inocentes (you can stream it on Netflix if you were absent). Worked on “Personal a, or not” in lab, also “Backward Verbs” levels 1-3, and “Participles and Progressive Tenses as needed. Homework: Prepare for quiz by doing “Unit 5.1 and When Words”, 30/90% as usual.

4/21, 22: Quiz 5.1 Vocab p. 273 plus “when” words review. Worked on preterite/imperfect sheet. Continued watching Voces Inocentes through 47:04. Homework: Look over Grammar Packet sections C, D, and E, and do the Conjuguemos assignment over past and present entitled “Progressive Tenses: Past and Present”. Get 20/90%. Be aware that preterite vs. imperfect will appear on the test (again) time-after-next. If you weren’t good at it on the last test, you won’t be good at it on the next one either unless you practice the forms on your own and/or see me in SRT for help on the preterite vs. imperfect choice! Also, you may want to work on Comparatives/Superlatives level 2 a little each day.

4/23, 24: Finished Voces Inocentes. Homework: Prepare for test over 5.1 vocabulary, “when” words review (p. 187 vocab sheet). Comparatives and superlatives (like “Comparatives/Superlatives, Level 2” in Conjuguemos.), preterite vs. imperfect, “liking” and “having fun” from writing reference sheet, and present and past progressive tenses (like “Progressive Tense, Present”, “Progressive Tense, Past”, and “Progressive Tense, Past and Present” in Conjuguemos.) You will need to be able to correctly attach object pronouns, including double object pronouns, as in these activities.

4/27, 28:

4/29, 30: Test 5: 5.1 vocabulary, “when” words review (p. Homework: Carefully read letter F in the grammar packet, and put in a good 20 minutes on “Personal a, or not”. I don’t expect you to finish this yet, just put in 20 minutes so you can finish it eventually. It is difficult because there is so much review vocabulary on it, so have your vocabulary lists handy. Be aware that the next test—not to mention the final exam, which is less than a month from now—will require you to recognize words from all vocab lists this semester. There is a Quia matching/flashcard activity (below) that you can do (a little each day!) to help you to review them. You can also carry around your lists or flash cards with you to work on them during your down time. Personal a will also be on the next test, so practicing that activity in Conjuguemos will prepare you for both the personal a section, and give you a good review of this semester’s vocabulary.

5/1, 4: PowerPoint presentation (downloadable below) about “Affirmative and Negative Words” from letter J in grammar packet. Practiced preterite and imperfect by telling stories from pictures. We also talked about the food project and the vocabulary quiz. An introduction to the Conjuguemos activities over the past participle and the past and present perfect tenses (letters G and H in the grammar packet). Homework: Continue preparing for next quiz over p. 297 vocabulary and affirmative and negative words from letter J in the grammar packet. Begin work on your 3Ps project. Also, read section G in the Grammar Packet. Do the activity entitled “Participles, Past (Regular)”. You will be shown sentences or phrases, but your answer will be one word: the past participle. That participle will need to agree with the person or thing it describes. Get 20 right with 90% accuracy. This is not for credit yet, but start working on letter J in Conjuguemos: ”Affirmative and Negative Words, Level 1”. Continue practicing “Personal a, or not”. Keep in mind that when you do this, you’re practicing for the review vocabulary for the final, so don’t slack off on it—do a little each day!

5/5, 6: Went over test. P/I picture story writing. Conversation over the weekend/spring break. Received final exam review sheet and talked about the exam. Homework: Continue preparing for the quiz over 5.2 vocabulary and the test (see below), and the final. Keep working on “Personal a, or not”, shooting for 20/90%. Also, begin learning the irregular past participles in section G in the grammar packet and practicing them on Conjuguemos. "Participles, Past, Irregular", “Participles, Past, Regular and Irregular”, and "Participles, Past, as adjectives" will be due for credit 5/13, 14, with a standard of 30/90%. Also, complete letter J in Conjuguemos: ”Affirmative and Negative Words, Level 1”. For in-class essay, be prepared to use these words: primero, entonces, luego, el miércoles (on a particular day of the week), después.

5/7, 8: Work on affirmative/negative sentences, past participles, perfect tenses. 5.2 Vocabulary DVD. Write essay. Homework: You’ll need to know how to use affirmative and negative Words” (in Conjuguemos) in about a week for the test, and then again on the final, so make sure you’re able to do “Affirmative and Negative Words, Level 2” soon. The PowerPoint presentation downloadable below should be viewed before each time you practice, to remind you of the tricky parts of all this. Keep working on “Personal a, or not”, shooting for 20/90%. “Participles, Past, as adjectives” will be recorded 5/13, 14, with a standard of 30/90%. Do final preparations for quiz by doing Unit 5.2 vocabulary assignment in Conjuguemos, 25/90%. If you’re doing a food presentation, bring it with you next class. Make sure you follow all instructions and elements of the rubric exactly!

5/11, 12: Quiz, Vocabulary 5.2 (p. 297) and the Affirmative and Negative Words from letter J of the Grammar Packet. Food presentations. Worked on affirmative/negative sentences, past participles, review vocabulary, preterite forms. Homework: By now hopefully you’ve completed “Personal a, or not” and “Affirmative and negative words, Level 2”, both with a standard of 20/90%. If not, do so by next class. Begin preparing for test (see below, and don’t forget about the review vocabulary 3.2, 4.1, and 4.2!), and final. Be aware, you have through SRT 5/21 to make up missing homework that qualifies for an extension, and quizzes. All missing work becomes a zero on 5/22!

5/13, 14: Worked on affirmative/negative sentences, past participles, review vocabulary, preterite forms. Homework: Prepare for test over 5.2 Vocabulary, affirmative and negative words (level 2), recognition of 3rd quarter’s vocabulary (3.2, 4.1, 4.2), personal a, or not (there is no test section for “personal a”, but you still need to practice it, because at least one sentence that you translate will require the personal a), past participles (regular and irregular, used as part of the perfect tenses and as adjectives), and a short section of preterite and imperfect. Spend some time on the activity in Conjuguemos called “Participles, Past: Participle vs. Preterite”. This addresses an issue that has cost students points on the test in the past. Be aware, you have through SRT 5/21 to make up missing homework that qualifies for an extension, and quizzes. All missing work becomes a zero on 5/21!

5/15, 18: Test 6 5.2 Vocabulary, affirmative and negative words (level 2), recognition of 3rd quarter’s vocabulary (3.2, 4.1, 4.2), personal a, or not (there is no test section for “personal a”, but you still need to practice it, because at least one sentence that you translate will require the personal a), past participles (regular and irregular, used as part of the perfect tenses and as adjectives), and a short section of preterite and imperfect. Practice those forms, and get help in SRT if you need it. Homework: There are two activities that address weak areas on the final exam. These will probably get you more points-per-minute than any other way of studying, and you should do them every day between now and the final. One is in Conjuguemos: “Sem II Exam Prep”. The other is in Quia: “II Final Exam prep Sem 2”.   B2 only, prepare for food presentations. Be aware, you have through SRT 5/20 to make up missing homework that qualifies for an extension, and quizzes. All missing work becomes a zero on 5/21!

5/19, 20: Advice on frequently missed topics on final exam. Practice in lab. Watched “El Mariachi”.
