First Six Weeks Summary: This first six weeks, I will be reading the novel, Donavan's Word Jar, to the students. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing "wonderful, outstanding words" all around us. Then we will be reading the legend of "Young King Arthur" and comparing it to the story "Wings" (the Greek myth of Icharus and Daedalus). Near the end of the six weeks, we will be starting our first novel together, called - The Kid in the Red Jacket. Throughout these stories and novels, we will always be focusing on several TAKS objectives they will need to know, such as: main idea and details, cause and effect, word meaning, context clues, character studies, making summaries, making inferences, and vocabulary development. It is my goal this year to try and encourage your child to learn to "enjoy" reading ... even in the middle of having to "learn something"!
