WEEK OF AUGUST 25TH - 29TH, 2008 WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!! We have begun another exciting year at Marion Senior High! I will be using this web page to let you know some of the things we will be doing, such as field trips, projects, etc. School Supplies List for Our Class: -Notebook paper -Pencils (No pens, please!) -Markers -Box of Kleenex -Box of Clorox wipes -Bottle of hand sanitizer During our first week of school, we spent a lot of time getting the "paperwork" kind of things out of the way. Thanks to all of the students and parents who have returned permission slips, etc. We also participated in several activities to help the students get to know each other a little better. This week, we are ready to get to work!!! Here's a general idea of how we are spending our days . . . 1st period - Independent Living/In-School Work: Students are working on writing their personal information and completing applications. This will eventually lead to getting an "in-house" job at MSHS! 2nd period - Social Studies and Science: Students are learning how to stay healthy! This week, we are discussing personal hygiene--with a focus on how it affects their social lives, health, and ability to get jobs. 3rd period - Rem. Language Arts: Students are working in "5 Ws" workbooks (at their reading levels). They are reading short news articles, and then answering who, what, when, where, and why questions. We are also working on summarizing the articles that they are reading. 4th period - Math: This week, we are working in Menu Math and/or Market Math books. Given a price list/menu, the students are figuring the total cost of 2 - 3 items that they purchase. 5th period - Independent Living/In-School Work: Students are working on writing their personal information and completing applications. This will eventually lead to getting an "in-house" job at MSHS! 6th period - Independent Living: Students are learning how to take care of their homes. Topics will include things like fire prevention and safety, poison prevention, etc. The focus is on staying safe in their homes. 7th period - This is my planning period. I do not usually assign homework. However, the students will benefit from participating in chores and other activities at home. Some ideas of how to involve them are: let them help cook a meal, expect them to do household chores (cleaning, dishes, etc.), allow them to count their own money and make purchases on their own, send them into the grocery store to pick up a few things, expect good hygiene, etc. Allowing them to do these kinds of things will help them in the long run! Feel free to call me at school if you need me! Thanks for all you do for your child! Tina Frazier
