Counselors Corner

Mustang Trails has two counselors serving approximately 600 students. Tena Coates is the counselor for third, fourth, and fifth grades. Karen Starr is the counselor for kindergarten, first, and second grades. These ladies meet with each class for classroom guidance lessons every other week. They also facilitate small support groups covering topics including divorce/separation, study skills, grief, friendship skills, self esteem, etc. Groups meet in the counseling office one 30 minute session per week for approximately six weeks. Teachers and parents may refer a child for small group counseling by contacting Mrs. Coates or Mrs. Starr or the student may self refer. The parent must sign a permission form before a child is allowed to participate in small group counseling. Students, teachers, or parents may request individual sessions.

Mrs. Coates and Mrs. Starr coordinate referrals and placements for special education testing and gifted/talented testing. They also coordinate the character education program at Trails as well as Red Ribbon Week, Random Acts of Kindness Week, and co-sponsor a Drug Free Club for 5th graders only. The counselors have fun helping students to perform plays or puppet shows with character education messages or drug free messages.
