Sixth Grade Foreign Language
Research Project: Travel Page
Your travel page is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, April 15, 2003. Emergency absences will not be accepted/available. Late papers will be accepted with a deduction of 10 points for each day late.
Students will select a topic based upon the country/region selected in the class lottery/exchange. There can be only one student per class per topic. (Exceptions would be determined by the size of your class.)
Students will prepare a travel page on a country/region. The information provided must show evidence of research and expansion of the knowledge base on the selected topic.
A bibliography must be included. The bibliography should be on a separate sheet of 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper. This page should be titled: Bibliography. Copyright laws must be respected. Follow the examples in the Works Cited Examples packet for the correct bibliography entry format. Students must use at least one print reference and one electronic* reference. Ask Jeeves.com (or similar) will not be accepted as a citable reference. Search engines cannot be cited as references. It is very important that you write down the actual URL of every page you use. You should also do this type of annotation for all of the print materials you use. Do this as you are doing your research.
The travel page must contain at least three visuals. Any visuals used on the page should enhance the information and support the text. Travel page visuals must include a map of the country with its capital clearly marked. (Regional areas should be clearly marked on the map of the country.) A visual of the official flag of the country/region should also appear on your page. The flag should be in color.
You must do your own work. Remember that plagiarism will not accepted. To avoid the plagiarism penalty, remember to put the information in your own words. Using a computer to copy information and paste it into your page/word processing document without editing it constitutes plagiarism.
The travel page, including visuals, should be on an 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper. Only one side of the paper may be used. Correct spelling and grammar should be high priorities of the author. Complete sentences should be used throughout the page. Remember to have a title on your travel page. Please keep in mind that you are writing this page for an American audience.
Other questions to be answered as a result of your research should include: Where in the world is this country or region located? What type of government is practiced in this country? [What type of government is practiced in the country of the region you are researching?] How does this government work/function? Tell us the official language of the country/region and make the French language connection. [How did the French language first come to the country/region you are researching? How did the language evolve in this location?] What kinds of jobs/careers are available for the average person in this country/region? As a tourist to this country/region, which landmarks or sights should I consider seeing and why? (You should present at least three landmarks/sights.)
Please keep in mind that regional areas are part of a country. Therefore, you must still have the flag of the country. The government requirements, should be addressed for the country in which the region is located. The language requirement will undoubtedly discuss regional dialects and then the evolution to the acceptance of French as the universal language.
Do not attempt to do this project without frequently referring to this page of specifics. I strongly urge you to study the on-line rubric for this project long before you decide you have finished your work. The rubric is on-line and can be accessed via Mrs. Bunnell’s French Quia page, as given below.
Word processed documents must use the Helvetica or Times New Roman font. Do not mix fonts in your document. Only black ink will be accepted. Bold or italicized styles are not acceptable. The size of the font used in the body of the work or in captions should be no less than 10 points and no larger than 12 points.
You may use fonts, colors and sizes other than those specified above for the title on each page.
Do not make your visuals so small that they can be easily overlooked. Do not allow cellophane tape to show if you are using it to attach anything to your travel page.
Hand-written projects must use manuscript printing. Unlined paper, without holes, must be used. Blue or black ink is acceptable.
Please keep in mind that this is to be a single sided travel page. It is not a report in the traditional sense. Remember to put your name and class period on the back of all of the pages you turn in.
*Students without Internet privileges will need three print references.
