Welcome to Room 46! I am excited to begin another year! The Extended Day Kindergarten pre-screening will begin August 11. All parents will be contact to schedule a convenient time. Once the prescreening is completed, students will be selected for the EDK program. The EDK class is scheduled to begin Monday, September 15. You will be receiving a phone call from me before that date if your child qualifies to attend the EDK program. Open House will be Thursday, September 11 at 5:30pm in room 46. Below are some common questions, answers, and information about the EDK program. What is Extended Day Kindergarten (EDK)? EDK is a program that provides kindergarten students with additional instructional time in the areas of reading, writing, and math. PAE offers one EDK class limited to 15 students – smaller in size than the school division's average kindergarten program. Small Group Instruction is Important for Academic Achievement. Small groups of students within the classroom are an essential part of the success for EDK. Teacher and teacher-assistant led groups of 3-4 students will target specific skills while the rest of the class works independently at meaningful math and reading centers. Lessons are flexible and based on students’ needs. How is a student selected for EDK? Every student enrolled in kindergarten is screened during the beginning of the school year to determine if the student would benefit from additional instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics. Parents will be notified if their child has been selected. What type of instruction will be offered to students participating in EDK? All EDK students will spend half of the day with their regular kindergarten teacher and half with the EDK teacher. By extending the kindergarten day, students will have additional classroom time to help them master the reading, writing, and mathematics objectives taught in the regular kindergarten program. If my child is selected for EDK, how can I learn more about the program? PAE will hold an orientation meeting for all parents of students selected to participate in the EDK program. Parents will receive notification of specific dates and times for this important opportunity to learn how EDK will help their child succeed in school. My assistant, Amy Kendall, and I look forward to meeting you all and working with your wonderful children.
