UNIT 7 PROJECT OUTLINE-A NEW ROLE FOR THE NATION - Era of Progressivism and Reform

OBJECTIVE:
(What you are doing and why):
* Use the World Wide Web to investigate and research information on the Progressive Era and Reform Movements,
* Write an Essay and create a chart of significant issues of this time period,
* Compose a brochure/pamphlet that describes a reform movement,
* Give a presentation to the class regarding one of these issues,
* Write "Dear Home" letters from the front.

PROCEDURE:
1. EVERYONE MUST:
A.) Use the World Wide Web sites that I have notated to research the Progressive Era and the Reform Movements of the early 1900's. Using the information gathered, create a chart that shows the different issues of reform such as Big Business regulation, Political Corruption, Environmental Conservation, Temperance, Labor Laws, or any other issue approved by the teacher. Be sure to list major reformers and specific reforms. (Remember to note at least 4 of the sites that I have assigned and at least 2 that you have discovered on your own.)

SECONDLY, EVERYONE MUST CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
A.) compose a brochure/pamphlet designed to be used as propaganda concerning an issue of this time period that you are trying to be persuasive about. Choose from the issues listed above or one that is approved by the teacher. You should include images from WWW for this pamphlet.
B.) Write a persuasive argument regarding one of these issues and give a presentation about it in class. Presentation must be 5 minutes long and you should have images from the WWW to help guide your argument.
C.) Write 2 "Dear Home" letters from the war front (World War I). Write one to your family, wife, husband,and one to a friend. Put yourself in the shoes of a soldier or nurse.

ASSESSING YOUR WORK:
A.) Your essay will be graded using our Essay Rubric. Be sure to have an clear and concise Introduction, a body with strong supporting details and relevant facts, and a solid summary as your conclusion. Use outside information,have a clear plan of organization,and no spelling errors. Brochures/pamphlets will be graded using the following criteria: writer takes a strong, well defined position on the issue given, uses at least 3-4 appropriate reasons for supporting the issue, demonstrates knowledge of the subject (issue), includes images from the WWW, is error free and organized. "Dear Home" letters will be graded according to our Creative Writing Rubric, (similar to essay rubric above). The presentation will be graded on a rubric exactly like the brochure/pamphlet except that you will be graded on length of presentation and Speaking Skills instead of writing criteria.
