UNIT 8 PROJECT OUTLINE - PROSPERITY, DEPRESSION, AND WAR - FROM SELLING APPLES TO WAGING WAR

OBJECTIVE:
(what you are doing and why):

* Use the World Wide Web to research and locate information on the Great Depression, Dust Bowl, and World War II.
* Write a memorandum to the President regarding a policy action,
* Compose a Haiku poem,
* Research Depression Era recipes from the World Wide Web.

PROCEDURE:
EVERYONE MUST:

A.) Write a memorandum to the President of the United States that recommends a course of action or a new policy regarding the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, or World War II, including the issue of dropping the Atomic Bomb. The memo takes the form of "To:" and "From:" and "Regarding issue of:". Student will give a full and concise recommendation for the policy action and several reasons for supporting this suggestion. Student will site evidence of problem and give a reasonable solution. (Remember: at least 4 sites must be used from the teacher assigned sites and 2 sites discovered by the student and all notated.

Secondly, EVERYONE MUST CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
A.) Compose a Haiku poem from the perspective of a Japanese-American who was interned at the American camps during World War II.
B.) Locate Depression Era Recipes on the WWW and write them down. Images could be included also! Make the recipe (Depression Doughnuts, for example) and bring them to class for all to sample!

ASSESSING YOUR WORK:
A.) Your memorandum will be graded using our Persuasive Essay Rubric. Therefore, the student must be sure to have a clear introduction and explanation of the issue and policy recommendation, evidence of the problem and a developed solution that is reasonable, and a strong conclusion. Images from the WWW are recommended here too.
The poem will be graded fairly based upon descriptive language used, empathy shown for the group of people writtn about, and student making direct references to the issue of the camps. A written final copy must be presented also. Images are recommended here too. The recipe cards must be hand writtn with no errors, and recipe fairly complimentary to the real product. Images shown on the recipe paper would improve grade also. All recipes papers must be presented for final portion of grade.
