UNIT 9 PROJECT OUTLINE - THE NATION TODAY AND TOMMORROW - CIVIL RIGHTS TO CURRENT ISSUES

OBJECTIVE:
(What you are doing and why):
* Use the World Wide Web to research and discover information and images about life in the United States from 1945 to the Present.
* Write an Editorial for a newspaper regarding an issue of this time period,
* Write a Eulogy for a historical hero of this time period,
* Develop a Debate regarding an issue of this time period.

PROCEDURE:
EVERYONE MUST:

A.) Write an Editorial to a newspaper about a historical event of 1945 -Present. Choose an issue or event and clearly state your opinion. Be sure to research how people from different parts of our country viewed events and issues of this time period in a different manner from one another. Correctly state your views and the subject matter. You must include images found on the web sites researched. (Remember: you must notate 4 sites from the teacher approved list and find 2 WWW sites of your own.)

Secondly, EVERYONE MUST CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
A.) Create a Eulogy for a historical hero of this time period, 1945 - present. (A few examples are Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, a soldier in the Vietnam War, a Woman fighting for Equal Rights, etc.) Students must gain teacher approval of person being eulogized before beginning writing.
B.) Develop a debate based on an issue during this time period or a current issue of today. (Examples include environmental concerns, gun control, youth violence, Internet use by children, political parties, etc.) All debates must be written down and have BOTH sides of the issue presented. Bring the debate plan to class and demonstrate the 2 sides of the issue. Maybe we'll end up using your debate!)

ASSESSING YOUR WORK:
A.) Your editorial will be graded using our Persuasive Essay Rubric. Therefore, the student must be sure to have a strong introduction to the event or issue and clearly state his or her opinion on the subject. You must give relevant facts, supporting details that are historically correct, and conclude with a recommendation of a solution to the problem or issue. Images from the WWW sites should be included for further effect. Grading for the eulogy will follow our Creative Writing Rubric. Be sure that there is relevant and correct historical facts used and there are no spelling errors. Grading for the debate will follow the guidelines for an oral presentation; persuasive arguments on both sides, historically correct facts used, clear statements with supporting details and a strong conclusion are all required for a high grade.
