Music classes are taught at Greendale Elementary on an alternating basis with Rhea Valley Elementary. All students at Greendale have music once every other week for forty-five minutes. The textbook series used is The Music Connection, by Silver Burdett and Ginn. Recordings, videos, games, manipulatives, and instruments supplement the textbook.

Students take part in a variety of activities in music class. These are designed to help children develop musical skills and to know and appreciate many different styles of music. Students learn about composers by listening to their music and hearing stories about their lives. They listen to music written in various styles and become familiar with many kinds of performing groups.

Singing is a very important part of music class. Singing activities include songs from our American folk tradition, songs from many parts of the world, patriotic and holiday songs, and songs that are part of music dramas in which students are invited to participate.

The objectives for all music classes are from the Standards of Learning for Music developed by the Virginia Department of Education. Due to the large number of students served by the itinerant music teacher, teacher observation and questioning are the primary tools for evaluating students in music class.
