Indiana Standards for Third Grade
3.3.1 Observe and describe the apparent motion of the Sun and the Moon over a time span of one day.
(The students will observe the daily movement of the Sun, Moon, and stars over a one day period through the use of the star ball.)
3.3.2 Observe and describe that there are more stars in the sky than anyone can easily count, but they are not scattered evenly.
(The night sky with constellations and the Moon will be presented using the star ball and some of the better known constellations will be discussed.)
3.3.3 Observe and describe that the Sun can be seen only in the daytime.
(The Sun will be brought up against the backdrop of stars and the procession of the day will be discussed.)
3.3.4 Observe and describe that the Moon looks a little different everyday, but looks the same again about every four weeks.
(Moon phases and the lunar cycle will be presented.)

In addition to the instruction in the planetarium, the teachers will also receive a sky calendar for the month visited and a crossword puzzle over the phases of the Moon for each student.
