A VERB is a word that expresses an action or a state of being. We WENT to Boston last April. IS a firefly a beetle? An ACTION VERB is a verb that expresses physical or mental action. I USE a stove to cook dinner. Please EAT quickly. A LINKING VERB is a verb that expresses a state of being. A linking verb connects the subject of the sentence with a word in the predicate that explains or describes the subject. Judy Blume IS a writer. He APPEARED happy. Linking verbs formed from the verb BE: am has been may be is have been might be are had been can be was will be should be were shall be would have been Other linking verbs: appear grow seem stay become look smell taste feel remain sound turn Transitive and Intransitive verbs: A TRANSITIVE VERB is an actiion verb that expresses an action directed toward a person, place, or thing. (In other words, it has an object) She ate cake. (ate is the verb, cake is the object, so it is transitive) AN INTRANSITIVE VERB does not pass action to a receiver or an object. It simply expresses an action or tells something about the subject. (In other words, it does not have an object.) She ate quickly. (ate what? it doesn't say, so there is no object and it is intransitive) She ate in front of the kitchen. (in front and of the kitchen are prepositional phrases and not objects. It does not say what she ate, so it is intransitive.) HELPING VERBS: A HELPING VERB (auxillary verb) helps the main verb to express an action or a state of being. ex/ CAN speak WILL learn SHOULD HAVE BEEN fed Together the main verb and its helping verb or verbs are called a VERB PHRASE. ex/ I CAN GO to the store. I HAVE BEEN hungry. HELPING VERBS: am were have did can will is be had may could would are been do might shall was has does must should Sometimes a verb phrase is interrupted by another part of speech. She MAY not WANT to go to the party. DID you BUY her a present?
