Welcome to the Discovering Alabama Watersheds Page!
We will be using the award-winning Discovering Alabama public televsion series, by Dr. Doug Phillips, in our studies of the wonderful natural resources of the watersheds in our state.
We will be using the following technology to study our watershed:
1) GPS unit to mark the exact location of our test site
3)sensor probes that test the chemical quality of the water
4)digital camera
We will study the soil, geology, water, plants, animals, and people of our watershed.
We will test the chemical water quality (pH, dissolved oxygen, etc.)
We will also test the biological quality of the water by observing and classifying the macroinvertebrates (insect larvae, snails, leeches, etc.) that live in the water. The presence or absence of macroinvertebrates is an indication of water quality.
Looking at water, you might think that it's the most simple thing around. Pure water is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It's not at all simple and plain, and it is vital for all life on Earth.
Where there is water, there is life. Where water is scarce or polluted, life struggles. The quality of water in our country has been identified as the number one environmental issue of the 21st Century.
We, as citizens, must understand the relationship between our actions and the effects those actions can have on our environment, especially our soil and water.
