NOTES: CONDITIONAL IS USED FOR WOULD WITH A VERB THAT HAS NOT YET HAPPENED (NOT PAST TENSE)...DO NOT CONJUGATE WOULD--SIMPLY USE THE FUTURE STEM (USUALLY THE INFINITIVE) AND ADD ÍA, ÍAS, ÍA, ÍAMOS, ÍAN (SEE TEXT PP122-124 AND BOTTOM OF THIS BOX)
IT IS USED TO EXPRESS A CONDITIONAL OR POTENTIAL FUTURE (WOULD)
1. POTENTIAL--WOULD YOU BRING ME SOME MILK?
2. CONDITIONAL--HE WOULD PASS, BUT HE DOESN'T STUDY.
3. TO EXPRESS FUTURE IF A INTRO CLAUSE IS IN THE PAST. HE SAID HE WOULD COME TO MY PARTY.
4. HOMEWORK: 10 ORIGINAL compound sentences using the conditional with BUT.... 2 with Yo, 2 with Tú, 2 with él, 2 with nosotros and 2 with Uds.

STEM:
Both Future and Conditional use the infinitive (or a truncated form of the infinitive)as their stem (ie comer)
The irregular infinitive stems fall into three groups:
complete irregulars (drop ec or ce)

haber habr- (there will/would be)

querer querr-
saber sabr-
intrusive d (change of the infinitive to d)
poner pondr-

Whether Regular or Irregular add the ENDINGS as follows:
Future (will) Endings
-é hablaré
-ás hablarás
-á hablará
-emos hablaremos
-án hablarán
Conditional(would,but-because) Endings
-ía hablaría (pero) (porque)
-ías hablarías
-ía hablaría
-íamos hablaríamos
-ían hablarían
USAGE
In general, Future and Conditional
correspond to their English counterparts
Spanish Future is used like the English future
will+verb I will be there. Estaré allí.
Spanish Conditional is used like English
conditional would+infinitive I would come but . . .
Vendría pero...
(REMEMBER: When "would" means "used to" it is in the PAST/use the imperfect.)
Note: A condition must exist that prevents the
occurance like if/si or but/pero, or if you
want to express a future event w/a past tense clause
(ie He "told" me that he "would be there" tonight.
He "told" me is in the past, so one cannot use will in the
next clause.)
