***PHHS WIND ENSEMBLE CLASS SYLLABUS***
Class Description:
Wind Ensemble is a performing ensemble for all students, grades 9-12, with prior instrumental experience (band instruments only). This ensemble will cover all the skills outlined in the Advanced SOL Objectives. (Most students entering high school band will have already completed the Intermediate Level.) Depending on the number of non-marching band members in class, marching music may be practiced during class time as well (1st Semester Only).
In addition to performing in class, there will be a series of concerts and festivals the students are required to attend. Among these are a Winter and Spring Concert (date to be determined), Solo & Ensemble Concert, All-County Auditions, All-District Auditions, and a Solo & Ensemble Festival. Below is a list of important dates:
Check BAND CALENDAR
Grading Policy:
***Since Wind Ensemble is a performing ensemble that requires student participation for success, ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY; and it will play an important role in the grading policy. See below for details:
Evaluation for the Wind Ensemble (both semesters) will be determined by an average of this criterion:
1. Weekly Effort, Conduct, and Participation Grades.
2. Preparation for Class (Having materials, etc.)
3. Attendance and Tardy Grade for Rehearsals
4. Written Evaluations (including Semester Exams and SOL tests)
5. Level of Musicianship and Improvement
6. Playing evaluations (at least all 12 major scales + chromatic are required for High School ensembles)
7. Care of Equipment
8. Performance Attendance & Attendance at District/County Festivals
Attendance Grading Policy:
*Grading policy for in-class rehearsals will be the same as PHHS’ policy on Attendance.
Absence from After School Rehearsals (without school or parent approval):
o For each after-school rehearsal, the student's Rehearsal Grade will drop 30 points. (The first absence will result in a B for the 6-Weeks' Grade, and so on.)
o To make up Absence grade deductions, students are always given opportunities for extra credit, or the instructor may assign a special assignment to the student. See extra credit information below for details.
Absence from Performances (without approval by director):
o Any Performance Absences will result in the deduction of your Performance grade by 100 points. (Failure for the 6-Weeks). Just don’t miss! Clear your schedules now!
o To make up Absence grade deductions, students are always given opportunities for extra credit, or the instructor may assign a special assignment to the student. See extra credit information below for details.
Each 9 Weeks Grade will be determined by the following:
25% - Practice and Effort – 100 POINTS. Students will be evaluated on their practicing. There will be no written record given by the band director to the students concerning practice, so evaluation will be strictly aural. The director will be able to tell if the students are giving enough time toward practice because improvement will either occur or not occur. In addition, if a student is practicing and seeing no results, the director will grade on the effort given by the student. Other class activities that require the student to practice will affect this grade as well. Students should practice an average of 30 minutes per night.
25% - Rehearsal Preparation – 100 POINTS. Students are expected to have all materials. A lack of required materials during any class will result in a deduction of 10 points for instruments and 5 points for music or other materials from this category. Absence from an after-school rehearsal results in this grade lowering by 30 points for each offense, unless approved by the director.
25% - Performance Attendance – 100 POINTS. Since the presence of all students is vital for the success of the entire ensemble, students are expected to attend ALL performances. If a student misses a performance, and their absence is unexcused, 100 points are deducted from their 9-Weeks Grade. If a student is late for a performance call-time, their final performance grade is lowered by 20 points.
25% - Playing and Written Tests – These assignments will be assessed through announced tests. They will be performed during band class and will be graded by the band director. Playing assignments will be announced in advance so students will have ample time to prepare at home.
Extra Credit:
Students will be given opportunities to improve their grade. Below are examples of ways to earn extra credit.
1. Attending a concert/performance outside of school (“popular” concerts excluded).
2. Playing more than one octave on scale tests (+2 points per octave).
3. Playing practice exercises for the director.
4. Anything approved by Mr. Semones.
Chair Auditions:
Chair auditions are held in the first semester and determine chair placement and concert section leaders. Auditions consist of 2 Major Scales, Chromatic Scale, Sight-Reading, and a Prepared Selection assigned by the instructor. Chair Auditions are required and affect the student's Practice & Effort grade.
Class Rules:
1. Be on time and prepared. (To be early is to be on time…)
2. Respect everyone. (Treat people how you would like to be treated!)
3. Do not talk, unless given permission.
4. No food or drinks (except for water) in class.
