This class incorporates a wide array of strategies that encourage students to draw upon a variety of learning styles. Common classroom learning activities will include warm-ups, skill-related lessons, labs, word study, responding in writing, small-group and class discussion, independent work, collaborative work, and projects.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
•I expect my students to show up each day prepared to be actively engaged and to fully participate in the day’s lessons, discussions, and other activities. You will need the following items every day: 1. A composition book or loose leaf paper, 2. Two writing utensils, and 3. Homework due.
•If you forget any of your materials, please ask one of your peers to share or if you can borrow any supplies. It is important that you come prepared to learn, with all your materials, each day. There will be a few sharpened pencils on my desk. You may take one and replace it at the end of class.
•We will have homework several days each week, but rarely on Fridays. Many students complete the assignments during team studies, but the time homework takes the individual student will vary. It is not assigned merely to keep you busy. It is meant to help you practice or prepare.
•If you feel you will not be able to complete an assignment on time and wish to have an extension, you may request one. I am much more likely to give you an extension if you ask more than a day before a due date.
•Appropriate classroom behavior includes the following:
When someone is talking, you are listening;
When you are talking, you are mindful and respectful of others and their feelings;
Any behavior that makes anyone else feel unsafe is not ok and will not be tolerated.
•Sometimes it’s hard to listen when we have something to say... If you are unable to contain yourself, prevent others from learning, or act inappropriately, I will warn you that your behavior is inappropriate and ask you to stop the behavior. If you continue, you can expect a strike or silent lunch. Remember that three strikes in a week in all classes combined result in an office referral. Any behavior that makes anyone feel unsafe will also result in an office referral.
•All county and school rules are to be followed at all times.
•If you are absent, it is your responsibility to turn in work due from when you were absent. Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions if you do not understand an assignment.
•Science class begins immediately upon entering the classroom. Please go directly to your assigned seat, get out your notebook, and look at the Science white board. The daily agenda will be listed and most days you will be directed to answer a daily science question. You need to be working on this as soon as you sit down.
•I expect you to listen, take notes, and participate in discussion and class activities. Your goal should be to participate at least once daily in whole class discussion.
•If you have a question or want to say something, raise your hand and wait to be called on. What you have to say is important, and your classmates and I need to be able to hear you. Only one person should be addressing the class at a time.
•If you have a question during individual or group work time, please wait patiently as I address each students needs in an orderly fashion.
•When you work in groups, do so quietly. (Remember the 12” rule: If you can be heard from that distance, you are talking too loudly.) Remember the group role requirements for Captain, Reporter, Enforcer, and Scribe, and perform your duties accordingly. You will be accountable for group work both as a team and individually.
•If I raise my hand with fingers outstretched, all students are to immediately freeze, turn their eyes on me, be silent, listen carefully to what is being said, and follow my directions. If you are working individually, with partners, or in groups, and I say, “CLASS” you are to immediately follow the above instructions, but you are to respond with the single word, “Yes.”
•If you need to use the restroom, please raise your hand to ask permission. Only one person may leave the classroom at a time. Sign out on the clipboard by the door, (noting the time out and the time you return). Take the pass and leave quietly. When you return, sit down quietly.
•If you need a sharp pencil, please silently rise, go to the cup on my side desk and borrow a sharpened pencil. Please replace this pencil at the end of class in the “used” cup. If you need paper, you may pick up two sheets from my side desk during homeroom time. If you need more during the class, please raise your hand and wait for my response.
•When the fire alarm sounds, if you are sitting by the windows, please close them. Form a line by the back door and when we are all ready, we will walk silently up the hill to the track and wait in line. We will not chat with friends at this time.
•We will always try to do a quick recap or summary and most days you will complete a short exit slip. Please do not pack up your things when you see it is almost time to leave. I will give you time to clear off your table and get your things together before I dismiss you. Please make sure that your table is completely clear before you leave your area.
•Do not leave your seat until I dismiss you.
