What are we learning?
Math Learning Target: I can read tell time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour and minute. I can read a schedule and determine elapsed time.
Math homework comes home on Monday and is due Friday.
Reading Learning Targets: I can monitor my reading and ask questions about what I'm reading when I am confused. I can put events in order after reading a text. I can identify the problem and solution in a text.
Reading homework: Read your AR book 25 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Students should record what they've read in their homework reading log (reading rocks log)
Word Study Learning Target: I can choose the appropriate ending to a root word.
Each Monday, students will bring home a list of words that they should study throughout the week. The words will come home in a packet which includes the list of words and several activities they should complete and return on Friday. Word lists are based according to the word pattern we are studying in class. Quiz is every Friday.
Language Learning Targets: I can write the correct abbreviation for a word. I can identify the root word given a word with prefixes, suffixes, or both.
Language arts (how language and words work within text) will be an important part of learning in third grade. Each week, students will have specific learning targets focused on a certain aspect of language.
Writing Learning Target:I know where I am in the writing process. I can organize my writing so that it makes sense to the reader and is interesting to read.
Writing is where all our literacy learning comes together! Students will use the writing process to author various genres of writing including personal narratives, descriptions, opinions, memoirs, and letters. They will utilize tools such as 6 +1 Traits, varied conventions, and mentor texts to enhance and raise the level of their writing. Students will author creative writing pieces, publish books, and practice writing to a given prompt.
Science/Social Studies Learning Target: I understand how elections work and know the responsibilities of our President.
Third grade science and social studies curriculum will be embedded into the literacy instruction so that while students are mastering Reading and Language Arts curriculum, they will be reading and writing about interesting topics in science and social studies. Several projects throughout the year will also incorporate these standards.
