Welcome to English 9/World History The following list of class assignments is subject to change, so check this page frequently. Welcome to our class. 8/19: Introduction of the class. Details will be given today. 3-RING BINDER DUE BY MONDAY, 8/24. 8/20/21: Continue intro. Bring Touching Spirit Bear for the next two weeks. Spirit Bear packets distributed today. 8/24: BINDERS/12 SECTION DIVIDERS DUE TODAY!!!! Also due today - 1/2 page JOURNAL on observation on a topic of your choice. 8/25/26: Discuss writing conventions we find in the novel. 8/26: Bring today your articles on Constructive/Destructive anger. 8/27-28: Complete Anger Poster with group 8/28: I Am Poem introduced - Venn Diagram due on Tuesday (9/1) - see Touching Spirit Bear Packet. Follow directions. 9/1: Venn Diagram due contrasting Cole Mathews from the beginning of the novel to the end. 9/2: Return Venn Diagram - Final post discussion of Touching Spirit Bear - We are all part of one circle according to the Native American beliefs. We will complete our discussion in a circle passing the "feather" as a symbol of our respect for one another and the belief that all are entitled to be heard. 9/2 - 9/4:We will see an intro to Of Mice and Men via a powerpoint presentation on the migrant worker, the Great Depression and life in the US following the stock market crash. Students will view the film Of Mice and Men and answer questions in a packet. 9/4: I AM Poem due today - Cole #1 9/7-9: View film in class - Of Mice and Men 9/9-10: Follow-up discussion - Of Mice and Men 9/9: I AM Poem due today - Cole #2 9/11: Write journal in class on one of the topics from the OM&M film. Preview vocab for upcoming reading assignment. Bring orange READER/WRITER book to class. REspond to the Survivor survey on page 3. Then, begin reading the story on page 4 - The Most Dangerous Game. Stop reading on page 8 (pause and reflect). Make sure you respond to all of the Close Read sections in the light blue columns. This is due on Monday. 9/14: Tomorrow, you and your partners will present to the class your "survivor" story and which skills you feel are most important. Next, we will discuss the story up to where you stopped in the story. Tuesday reading assignment: pg. 8 - 14 (stop at pause and reflect). Be sure and follow all of the prompts. 9/15: Discuss survivor stories and The Most Dangerous Game. Assignment for Wed. - continue reading The Most Dangerous Game - complete pages 14-19 + annotate in the margins. 9/16: Discuss the plot of the story up to Pg. 19. Finish reading the story for tomorrow. 9/17: Quiz on the entire story today. 9/18: Assignment for today: Complete the Exposition section of the handout - Outlining the Plot. Background ppt. and handout in class. Story discussion/Elements of Literature - notes in class 9/21 - 24: We will work on the Elements of Literature and apply them to the MD Game story. Power point on the Cornell Method of Notetaking. 9/22: Biology presentation on Fear and how our bodies respond to fear. How does this connect to the MD Game? Also, Mrs. Rosean will speak on taking notes from a text and lecture. 9/23: Indirect and Direct Characterization using Shrek to demonstrate this element. 9/24: Class will take notes using their history books during class. No class 7th period (presentation in the auditorium). 9/25: Continue with the Shrek handouts. MD Game project introduced. Begin looking at irony as seen in the MD Game story. 9/29: Binder evaluation returned today. Continue finding irony with partner in class. Homework: due Oct. 1 - Reading Notes from Chapter One, Section Two - Red history book. Due Thursday: Oct 2 - MD Game worksheet on irony, simile, or metaphor. 10/1: Begin discussion of curiosity and suspense. Journal topic: What are you curious about? 10/2: Continue introduction of literary and media suspense. No assignment for Monday, except your journal. 10/5: We will begin reading "Seabiscuit" in class and continue our discussion of Historial Man. Today begins Homecoming Week, so other than journals, most of your work will be in class. However, you will be taking a quiz on "Seabiscuit," so pay close attention to the discussion in class. Journal: Analyze the causes for the Neolythic Revolution 10/28: Begin reading The Cask of Amontillado in class - see handout - we will preview the vocabulary from the handout. 10/29-30: Continue reading story aloud in class. Answer guided questions as we go. 11/2: Continue reading story - take notes. Project introduced. Journal: Analyze CHANGE. You will work with a partner on one section of the packet and then "teach" the rest of the class on your assigned section.
