Your essay should have at least five or six paragraphs. The first paragraph is the introduction. It should begin with general information about the book and name the author. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis or main idea sentence. It serves as the focus for the paper. Example Listening Woman, a novel by Tony Hillerman, is set in the Navajo country of New Mexico. The story is about a medicine woman who gives her tribe advice about how to deal with problems and cure their sicknesses. This book is important because it shows the reader more about the spiritual beliefs of the traditional Navajo people use in dealing with the modern problems of our world. Check your introduction. Does it name the title of the book? Does it name the author? Does it name the tribe? Does it tell why the book is important? Each of the body paragraphs needs to have a topic sentence or main idea sentence. Check each of your paragraphs. Does each one begin with a strong topic or main idea sentence? Each paragraphs needs information, reasons, facts, or examples to develop the topic sentence. Did you do that? The conclusion of the essay needs to go back to the original idea- why the book was important. Explain a little more now that the reader knows more about the topic.
