Suggestions for Writing -
We have written different types of writing this year, and they have all been evaluated based on the criteria for each piece. Therefore, students should make sure that they listen carefully in class to what is expected of them for assignments. Following directions is always a big part of any writing grade. They should follow specific instructions and review any handouts or notes given about an assignment. Make sure that all papers are proofread, read aloud, and done ahead of time. Don't wait until the last minute to print and always back up your work!

Common mistakes 6th grade students make in writing:
-incorrect heading
-including a title when the type of writing does not require a title
-not writing out numbers that are smaller than ten
-not following comma rules
-not varying sentence structure- sentences within a paragraph should not begin the same way
-starting a paragraph with a pronoun or an article- a, an, the (this is a weak way to start a paragraph)
-overuse of pronouns
-using the universal “you” or “talking” to the reader
-not following directions
-writing about themselves, when asked to write about a place or an object
-forgetting audience and purpose
-skipping lines between paragraphs
-forgetting the structure of certain types of writing (ex/five paragraph essay set up has a lot of specific parts)
-forgetting transitions when necessary
