When the letters 'ed' are added to an English word it can have one of three sounds.

Here are the rules.

1. 'ed' is pronounced as /ed/ or /id/ + 1 syllable after /t/ & /d/.

2. 'ed' is pronounced as /t/ after /p/, /f/, /k/, /sh/, /tch/ & /s/.

3. 'ed' is pronounced as /d/ after all other sounds.
