Greece - Geography

1 Greece is a wonderful country. It is full of many interesting places. Many are very old and very big. Some of Greece's most interesting places are huge old buildings. They were built thousands of years ago.

2 Greece is a peninsula. It is in southern Europe. What is a peninsula? A peninsula is a part of land that has water on three sides. The Aegean, Mediterranean, Ionian Seas surround Greece. Many islands are part of Greece. Try to imagine this: There are 1,400 islands around Greece! Some are big, like Peloponnesus. Many islands are tiny.

3 There are many mountains in Greece. Mount Olympus is one of them. This mountain is very important. Greeks thought that mount Olympus was the home for the gods. They believed there were many gods. They also believed that there was a king of all the gods. His name was Zeus.

4 One of Greece's hills is also very famous. It is called the Acropolis. The Acropolis is in Athens. Athens is one of Greece's largest cities. The Greeks built a huge building on top of the Acropolis. It was called the Parthenon. The Parthenon was a temple, which was a place for people to worship gods.

5 The Parthenon was built out of heavy stones. It has huge columns. The columns support a huge roof. It was built for the goddess Athena. A lot of the Parthenon has fallen down. Some of the building is still standing. You can still see part of it. There are also many other very old buildings and temples in Greece.

6 Greece also has many kinds of plants. Have you ever seen an orchid? It is a very pretty flower. In Greece, there are more than 100 kinds of orchids! In spring, Greece is covered with lots of pretty flowers.

7 It's easy to imagine that Greece is a very pretty place. With so many pretty plants and great old buildings, there's something to see almost everywhere in Greece!
