The school year is going by so quickly! May, already! We will be continuing our Unit on “La mer” for the next few weeks. The students will be writing a story about an ocean adventure. In Science, we will be learning about buoyancy and boats. I am asking students to build a boat at home using recyclable material and to bring it to school to share on Friday, June 1st. Their boat needs to float, carry cargo and be able to propel through water. Have fun experimenting with this at home. In Math, we will focus on addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers. Reviewing counting money with your child will help reinforce this math concept. In Social Studies we will learn about Pioneers.
Our school will be celebrating its 20th anniversary during Education week. On Wednesday, May 16th, there will be an assembly in the gym at 8:45 am to begin the celebration. On Thursday, May 17th there will be a Spring Concert “The Elizabeth Rummel Story”. Our class will take part in this. The children will be performing in both concerts at 1:30 and 6:30 (students could meet in our classroom at 6:20 pm.) They are asked to dress like a pioneer or mountaineer for the concert. Suggestions for boys are: knickers, jeans or dark coloured pants, plaid shirts, suspenders, an old fashioned hat. Suggestions for girls are: long printed dresses, aprons, long skirts, bonnet or an old fashioned hat. I will review this with the students. We will be celebrating “A Day in the Past” on Friday, May 18th. The children can dress the part (same costume they wore for the concert will be fine). The students will be visiting the other Grade 2 classrooms where Centres will be set up with activities.
Our class will be going on a field trip to Heritage Park on Thursday, May 31th. Please see the attached permission form.
June is the month for year-end field trips. I will give you the dates now in case you would like to mark your calendar, and I will send more information at a later date. -Pond Study and picnic (Dog pond): June 18th -Swim and picnic (Rec. centre and Lion’s park): June 27th
Thank you for volunteering for field trips and helping with Pizza days. A special thank you to parents who are helping their child with spelling, reviewing addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers and counting coins to $1.00. I would also like to thank you for your continued support in the reading program. Reading everyday sure makes a difference in your child’s progress.
