About me
Why I teach:

I worked in the information technology field for about 25-years. My last position (ten years) was with the law firm of Hunton & Williams, located in Richmond, VA. I was the Information Security Manager for the firm. I was primarily responsible for information and data security and protection. After a company layoff due to the economy (2009), I decided to become a career switcher and begin my life as a teacher.

I like working with kids, especially students with learning disabilities. I used to tutor/mentor kids in an inner city school in Richmond, Virginia before I switched careers. Many years ago, I was a residential counselor at a private school named Oakland School. I think that’s where the seed was planted to work with the struggling learner. I find working with special needs kids to be rewarding in many ways.

My Education:

I have an undergraduate degree in business administration and computer science. My master's degree is in teaching, with an emphasis on special education. I attended Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) and completed their Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) program in July, 2011. I am currently working on my doctorate degree (Ed.D.) through LMU with a concentration in curriculum & instruction and plan to graduate this school year.

My Hobbies:

I like music and play a couple of instruments: lead/rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and I sing too (mostly harmony). I have played in a number of bands during my lifetime. Currently, I just play for my own enjoyment. My "other" hobby is working on my doctorate degree...if you can call that a hobby!

Subjects That I Like:

My favorite subjects are: English, science, history, and math.

Classroom Management and Teaching Strategies:

My goal is to create a classroom environment conducive to learning. I try to motivate my students to want to come to class, participate, and enjoy the learning experience. I want all of my students to succeed. Failure is not an option in my classroom.

I like humor and feel it’s important to incorporate it, when appropriate, in the classroom. Most students have a sense of humor and it’s important to use it as part of an overall classroom management/teaching strategy.
