About me |
My interest in learning new languages began with an early childhood neighbor who became a very dear friend. She moved away to her parents' home town in Germany when we were in middle school. Knowing that I would visit her in Germany one day, I decided to learn German in high school. Traveling to places far away became a constant dream of mine. By the time I finished high school I had taken four years of German, two years of Spanish, and one year of French. I realized my dream when I participated in a student exchange while a junior and senior in college. I found employment in Germany and my stay stretched out to 7 1/2 years! Several years later I had another opportunity to live in Germany with my husband, assigned to an air base there, and my two children. We traveled throughout Europe and of course I have visited my dear friend and to this day we keep in touch with each other. I started teaching for the U.S. Army when I was in Germany the first time. Since then, I have taught German, Spanish, English, math, typing, reading, and communication skills. I earned my Master of Science degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (T.E.S.O.L.) and received a permanent teacher's certificate to teach German from the state of New York and the state of Florida. I have been teaching since 1981, and my students have ranged from 3 years old to retired adults. My most recent experience has been in public schools to include four and a half years of teaching high school and seven years of teaching middle school students. Currently I am enjoying the opportunity to teach English to International Students through the volunteer E.S.O.L. program at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. I am hoping to one day have an opportunity to take my teaching skills abroad to enjoy extended stays in cities around the world.
