The primary focus of a school counselor at the elementary school level is prevention. My main objective is to help all students learn basic life skills to help them have a successful school year. Non-academic issues can get in the way of a student's learning. Some of the skills counselors address with students, parents, and staff include: dealing with feelings, developing self-esteem, responsible behavior, coping with death/loss, dealing with separation/loss, making and keeping friends, homework/organizational skills, listening and following directions, dealing with bullying, conflict resolution, transitions, making healthy choices, and accepting differences.
