Dear Fourth Grade:
Congratulations! Today you picked your President and a new adventure in writing begins. Let me give you some guidelines about what you can do over the Christmas-New Year Holiday.
First of all, let me tell you WHY you pick your President this week. Many, many students from all over Phoenix do President reports in January. By knowing WHO your President is NOW, you can check out books before they are all gone. I will expect that you will read more than one book about your President.
This is your big job over the holidays: READ, READ, READ! Read about your President and take good notes. Below this sheet you will see steps about writing a report. Your job will be to complete the PREWRITING stage. There will be time for the other steps when you come back in January.
(THIS TOP PART IS WHAT YOU SHOULD TRY TO DO BEFORE BREAK IS OVER!)
STEP HOW TO WRITE A REPORT
PREWRITE -think, brainstorm, gather information, READ! PLAN -think ahead, get ideas, make some decisions RESEARCH -locate specific information, read it! _____________________________________________________
OUTLINE -decide how to present my material NOTE-TAKING -write down important information SLOPPY COPY -write a rough draft PUBLISH -“has to be pretty!”
