I have a long and varied background that allows me to see things from different perspectives.
Because I had to sew my own clothes in middle school and high school, I learned to layout and fit patterns. When I decided to buy an expensive sewing machine, I started my own business sewing custom clothes for other high school students, including wedding dresses and men's suits. When my high school sweetheart and I married, he bought me a $10 jig saw, and that was the beginning of my furniture making and cabinetmaking business. I was hired to teach furniture making for a boy's home during the mornings, and I worked as a sales manager for a local FM radio station in the afternoons. After moving to New Orleans area, I owned my own wallpaper and house trimming business. I was recruited to be the first female cabinetmaking and industrial arts teacher in Jefferson Parish. After spending a few years teaching, one of my students introduced me to a Commodore Vic 20 computer. I couldn't really afford or justify spending $200 for a home computer, so I taught myself programming and opened 15 Summer computer programming camps in the New Orleans area. We trained 200 teachers, 500 students, and donated 200 computers to schools. I was offered a position to sell computers and I was asked to learn the new drafting software called AutoCAD. I was the first person to sell AutoCAD in the New Orleans area, so I had to create a client list in the professional fields. I taught Architects and Engineers from NASA, Chevron, Shell, Exxon Chemical, Facility Management, and ship building. They showed me what they needed it to do and I showed them my approach. I was able to see a wide array of uses for the software and the potential for future growth. I used my AutoCAD skills to design and build a house in Metairie for a fellow teacher. I was offered the position as Educational Sales in NC for an AutoCAD vendor, and I applied what I learned to teach teachers and professors all over NC. Once I installed CAD labs in all the drafting programs, I had time to return to home building. I designed and built a small neighborhood of starter homes. When I finished building, one of the schools that I sold a CAD Lab to, asked me to come teach full time with my husband joining me to teach construction. When my students were having a hard time getting into Architectural school because they did not have art portfolios, I learned to draw and paint. Teaching drafting as a business and teaching art as a business helped all of my students gain acceptance into the programs to which they applied. Once I learned how to administer the AutoCAD and Revit Certiport tests, my students achieved more than I expected. My students earned over 200 certificates in AutoCAD, Revit, and Inventor. After 25 years, we retired so we could travel more. There are many more things for me to learn, and I look forward to every opportunity that arises. |

To set up a Gmetrix account go to Gmetrix.com Use your student number as your employee number and login. Then to take the sample tests, go to Gmetrix.net and use the access codes provided to you. You will see tests and training for 5 Autodesk products. Use the light bulb in training mode to understand the process required to pass certification.
Next go to Certiport.com and register, using your student number and make sure you use your student number as your employee number.
You are taking the AutoCAD certified user, Invertor Certified user, or Revit certified user tests. You can also work on 3D studio Max and Maya as an advanced certification. You can take the tests with your proctor. If you fail it, you can take the 2nd try in 24 hrs. and then you have to wait 5 days between tests.
You cannot use any notes or have any electronic devices on you at the time of the tests. You cannot discuss the test material with anyone.
The AutoCAD command material provided in test form on Quia, is just to help you learn the commands and processes you need to be a successful Certified AutoCAD user. A perfect score is 1000, and 700 is passing. That means you have to master at least 21 things to pass. Once you pass, you can still take the test to try to raise your score. After each test, check your score report and copy the objectives you need to work on. It is easy to succeed, if you make the effort to learn. When you go out into the world of work, the software will change dramatically and have more power, so a company needs to know that you can teach yourself new products, processes, and software. Don't be afraid to fail, jump in and make the effort. It would costs you $75 for each time you take a test, but Wake county paid a fee so you can make as many tries as you need to succeed. I treat every skill as a business opportunity. |
